New 430ex and Canon 20D

Hey guys...just got back from BB and got my first flash. Went with the 430ex since I wanted some control...but dont think im quite ready for the 580EX yet.

Anyway, just reading through the manual here and its talks about Auto zoom for Image size. I was reading that there would be a icon to the right of the focal distance on the 430ex LCD screen. For some reason, mine is not lit up. I tested out a few shots and its seems its picking up my focal distance on my lens and adjusting for it. I can hear the motor working on the lens when it changes distance. I also downloaded the newest firmware for my 20D which is supposed to fix some bug with the 430ex and the color temp. However i dont believe this to be my problem. Is there something im missing? I went through the manual twice so far...will go through it again to just be sure.

Anyone have any thoughts? The flash seems to work...i mean, im new to flash photography so i want to make sure i have it setup correctly.

Any help would surely be appreciated.

Ok, this might be dumb hehe...but it this for automatic zoom camera's like the G9 or something? Wow, if it is i would feel dumb hahaa...

Nope, it's for the EOS crop DSLR cameras.

Yes, its the little picture frame, should be just right of the zoom focal length....i dont have it on my screen at all....i cant find any info about it ...is it mode dependent?

Did you check to make sure that the head zoom is in auto zoom mode and not in manual zoom mode?

Yes....

Actually just got off the phone with canon and they said that the 20D will not show up as a 1.6 camera and the 430ex shouldnt see it as so.

I thought it was weird, cause wouldnt it adjust the focus length to the setting on the lens and not what it actually is with the crop factor?

The 430EX came after the 580EX and even the 580EX is supposed to show that icon when used with the 20D.

Did you double check C.Fn-03 on the 430EX to make sure it's set to 0?

Also, you did make sure that the head is pointed straight ahead and not in the bounce position, right?

Hmm, that was it...it shows up now. I thought the default setting would of been ok. I guess the canon person was wrong....go figure.

C.Fn-03=0 is the default so you or somebody else must have changed it previously. :)

Ya, i bought a open box from BB, someone had it before me...however, i was able to get a nice discount and still use my reward zones 12% off coupon..so it only cost me 215$..also picked up the 3 year replacement plan for 40$...so if anything is wrong i can replace it for a brand spanking new one, no questions asked.
