When shooting in IS mode 1 and panning (even very gently) the image in the viewfinder judders quite badly and continues to do so for up to a second after the camera stops moving. I've tried a friend's identical lens and it doesn't do this, so it looks like mine is faulty.

Anyone else had a similar problem ?

I've had something like this happen twice. Removing the lens and replacing seemed to fix it for a while, and when I got home I cleaned all the contacts with a pencil eraser. Haven't had it happen since.

Nope... I've never seen that behavior on mine..

As Scottes says.. Try cleaning the contacts.. Last November, my lens started causing an error and freezing the camera. Wiping the contacts gently with a microfiber cloth fixed it.. Hasn't been a problem since.

.. and you shouldn't pan in mode 1 anyway, switch to mode 2 for panning.

Cheers

I've had this happen also. The whole camera eventually locked up. Got an error message. Can't remember which one. Anyway I just dismounted then remounted. Problem fixed. I think. :? :D

My lens freaked out when going from vertical to horizontal. If you expect to pan, yeah, use 2. Many times though while framing a bird the bird will take off then you are panning in 1 mode.

Can't you train the bird to recognize when you are in Mode 1 or 2?

(never mind)
