^^^

I went to the support area on canon.com and could not find the 420EX manual. There was info on the 420EX support page, but no link to the manual that I saw.

For what it's worth, here's the link to the 420EX support page:

It is for this very reason why some Canon Speedlites are sold on the used market. The initial purchaser lost the manual and then can't make any sense out of the unit, so it is sold.

In any other circumstances I'd LOL, but right now, I don't find this the least bit amusing. :?

Ke98ith: Incidentally I've been looking for a manual myself as I have very recently purchased a used 550EX. I've found one on the german Canon's site. If you still need it and don't speak german, ask me and I'll stretch my Explorer for you.

Doesn't the link I posted have the 550 & 420 manuals?

Sure looks like it to me.

Here is some quick help for the 420.

1. On Off pretty simple here.

2. The green dot is normal sync good to 1/125 most of the time.
The Hzag is for FP sync. High speed beyond the above shutter.

3. The green LED next to the pilot light is the flash exposure currect LED.
Lights up green when you had a good picture exposure. Press Pilot for a test flash.

4. Set the flash to slave, camera to P, Tv, Av, M mode, and push the depth of feild on the camera body to fire the 1sec prelight feature. The flash head LED will read 24 in this mode and the AF led will flash.

Don't prefire above more then 10x this may damage and over heat the flash.

The group and channel functions are for use with mutliple speedlights but I think this would also be covered in manuals for other lights.

Else the flash is pretty much an auto mode only kinda flash no other real fancy functions that I know of.

I know it isn't the 420 but here's the 430, it may help you with some of the settings.

Let me know if it helps, if not, I'll scan my 420 manual for you.

My manuals for my 420EX, 550EX, and MR-14EX got a bit of water damage, with numerous pages being stuck together. My local camera shop quoted me $20 CAD for each manual. I decided to call Canon Canada, who quoted me $10 CAD per manual, including shipping. I don't know if the rep was in a good mood, or if they had a special, but they gave me one of the manuals free.

The flash new came with both English and Spanish books.
Thanks for the offer, if you really really want the Spanish version let me know, but I can tell from reading your reply that your english is better then 99% of the folks typing on the net.....likely myself included :D

I downloaded the file and it unzipped into a German PDF. The diagrams were helpful.

Hi,

I am new to this group. I had the same problem of not having the manual for Canon Speedlite 420EX electronic flash. After serching the net, I could down load the pdf manual (English language) from following site: It seems that this is not manual officially released by Canon Corporation, but a scanned version of the prited manual by an individual/ organisation, this is apparent from the quality of photographs in the manual. Nonetheless, it serves the purpose.

I've got a PDF of the manual. I've seen that scanned one, but this is a legit PDF. Is it possible to PM a PDF file on this site? If not, PM me with an e-mail address and I"ll send it out. Just ordered a 420 off ebay, should be here on Friday.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I lost my manual, and I'm shooting a friend's wedding (my first) tomorrow, and I'm having issues. Your timing is impecable! :)

Oh, and if I didn't say it... Thanks.

The Canon site no longer has the owner's manual for the Canon Speedlite 420EX

Try this:

I hope this helps!
