hi, Im looking for a good lens for shooting airshows,I have used my 70-200L in the past and found I need more range. Here is my short list:
sigma 135-400
sigma 100-300 f4
canon 100-400L is
The canon would be my first choice but im a bit bothered about people calling it a dust pump. Have any of you 100-400L owners found this to be a problem?
This question is really important, as I need to buy the right lens.
Thanks

Dust pump? no; It's just fine. If I were you I'd get the 100-400L for airshows... in fact that was one of the reasons I got my one ;)

You're right, zooms are a dust pump. I use a 300mm f4 L EF with a 1.4x converter for most of my shots.

If 100-400 is a "dust pump", then 24-70 is also a "dust pump" since they both changes the length when you zoom, right?
If you don't like the pump action zoom, there's nothing I can do. But if you are just concerned of 100-400 being pump zoom, forget about dust. It MAY collect more dust than those which doesn't change the length such as 70-200, but those dusts won't show up on your pictures...

An Airshow was the reason that convinced me I needed the 100-400 L IS. Expensive but well worth it if you want great quality! Don't even regret being broke since. (seriously, it is a GREAT lens!)

Can't speak for the other lenses you ask about but I've had no such "dust pump" problems with mine.

I used the 100-400mm lens for this past air show using my 300D. some of the shots i got off were tack sharp while others were a lil soft and sharpened in PS. you can check it out here www.strictly-s.org/Blues.htm keep in mind the last page isn't finsished so the last 30 or so pics on the page is a repeat. hope this helps with your lens choice

I'm using the Sigma 50-500 and am very happy with it.

Canon 100-400 IS and 1.4 multiplier. I found the sigma 50-500 to be a little softer,

I like them, Dan! I've got many of the same shots, probably on the same day ...
I'm looking at your photos and thinking "Hey, this background looks like Quonset!"
Dan, by the looks of your photos, I was probably not to far from where you were as I have many of the same shots with similar angles from 2003. (didn't have my Canon at the time but that show was one of the reasons I decided to upgrade to a 10D). I was lucky enough to have my sister sneak me into the VIP section. You couldn't have been to far from that.

I just finished visiting the reno air races. Canon Eos 1Ds; 100-400 IS and 1.4x. I have never had a problem with dust in the lense...dust on the sensor after I changed lenses at the show. You need a zoom lense as the aircraft are at varying distances and 560 (400x1.4) is about as long as you can get without a tripod. I used the IS and shutter speeds of 1/300 to 1/400. This gives sharp pictures but allows some blurring of the propellers.
Good luck.

Hey Phil, how close can you get to the action at Reno?
I was planning to come over one year (from the UK) but I was told that you can't get good pics unless you get a press pass because you are too far away. Did you have a pass? and can we see some of your pics please?

How close in Reno...Not very I was using 560 mm most of the time and still needed to crop pretty heavily. I think I would use a 600 mm lense with a 1.4x next time. There is room to set up a tripod at the back of the stands or in the boxed area. I would also spend more time during the early part of the week and skip the last weekend, or at least leave the camera behind then.

Yea I was shooting in the middle of the event I used my both 1Ds I'm not sure what day I was there. Yo can get food shots if you camp out fet there early and get down front. I have a good freind that could have gotton me on the press platform. He felt that my shots were better because I was actualy closer and had better angles.
