A friend of mine just opened a small provocative clothing shop. She will be having a short fashion show at a local club on Saturday. The club will open and they will clear the dance floor at midnight for her show. She has asked me to do the photography. I don’t know how the lighting will be. Any suggestions on what gear to take, should I shoot available light, flash, off camera flash would be greatly appreciated.

I am assuming that the chances of being in a very dark environment are high.

Take your fastest lens and a flash. Not sure how the flash will turn out, because the lighting is a mystery. You might want to ask how things will be illuminated, so you can be better prepared.

But if I were to be in your shoes, the 24-70 & the 550 just in case.

Cheers

Let's see.. A provocative clothing fashion show at Midnight in Hawaii. My advice would be to invite us to come and help.

Just kidding.. Persian is right.. You will need your flash. You don't want to overpower the scene so you might try dragging the shutter or using flash comp to hold it back. If you could bounce your flash or diffuse it, that would help also. However, if the club is really dark, you may be limited on what you can do. Can you go to the club ahead of time and see what the conditions are? See what lights they will have on? This will help a lot in planning.

Have fun

I see you have two flashes, bring them both and if possible use them both. Also having external power for your flashes would be handy to decrease charge time.

I would bet you'll be glad you brought them.

If it is a bar you will not have much room to use more then 1 flash. The purpose of the shoot is to show off the garments. Check the surrounding's you will be shooting in to see what type of lights are there. If the lights are incandesent and there are table lights slow your shutter which will include those lights for a good effect. You can use the night mode on your camera and it will adjust it for you. If I were you I would invest in a off Camera bracket so that your flash is up high pointing down so your shadow falls behind your subject or you will have a very large ghost behind them. I did some friend's wedding, hot shoe mounted and the shadow was bigger then them. I can take it out in Photoshop but you are better oof not having it there.

Good luck

I did a fashion shoot last week in a local club, it's my third time doing it, and from my experiences, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. It'll be dark, knowing it's a club, so flash is a must, bring diffuser if you have one.
2. It'll be crowded, so wide angle lens is recommended
3. Get there early. So you can do some test shots to make sure settings are correct for best exposure, bring grey card if you have one, to determine correct FEC
4. find out if there is a dressing reharsle, go there and take some shots just in case.
5. Enjoy it and have fun
