I apparently ruined a 1 year old S45 by allowing moisture to get into it. At least that’s what the factory repair center says. To my knowledge it never got wet and I am the only one that used the camera. I did have it with me in Texas this summer when there was high humidity but that’s all. Is high humidity enough to ruin this camera? Is this a common problem with this camera?

I am a former S45 owner -- recently sold it and replaced it with an S70. I've never heard of any problems with any of Canons digital cameras having problem in humid, non-condensing environments.
I don't know the specific numbers, but Tokyo and Osaka seem as humid as I've experienced in Orlando, DC, or Dallas (I was in both cities Japan cities in August -- it was miserable). Canon products are well engineered for normal use around the world, and I'd be surprised if the S45 had any undue moisture suseptibility as compared to any other name brand digicam.

That would have been my guess. I will likely replace it with a S60 because I liked the camera
