My new 430 ex keeps firing small bursts of flash whilst attached to my 400d all on its own. anyone else had this?

This happened to me once. I think that if you hold the aperture button thing next to the lens mount this fires the flash.

Its actually the depth of field preview button, and it gives a stroboscopic light, (looks almost constant for a about 1 second). i don't think this is your problem though, i have heard of similar issues on this thread.
try the studio lighting section instead.

Are you not pressing the DoF preview button? That would cause the flash to fire a "Modeling Light"

I still occasionally accidentally hit the DOF preview button despite knowing that it'll fire off the modeling flash (that's what Canon calls that stroboscopic effect that you get for 1 second). You may be inadvertently hitting it as well.

You can use the 430's custom functions to turn off the modelling flash.

In low light it'll also fire as a focusing aid. Or pressing the Exposure Lock button will cause it to fire; that's easy to bump.

I thought that it used the "infrared" (or sort-of infrared) light as a focus aid, not the main flash.

Exactly, with my 430EX, only the red LED emits for focus aid, i have never once seen a flash to focus.

Since part of this thread was originally posted in the EOS forum, Jon must have been thinking about the built-in flash when he posted his reply.
