I have been reading alot of the posts on both the tamron and the tokina 28-75 and the tokina lens the 2.8 Wich is better I did a search and i ahve not found anythign that compares these 2 lenses. Both good and bad. The only thing i read was that the tamron has some kind of locking thing on the zoom to prevent creep zoom, i assume you can turn this lock off. any imput would be helpful
thanks

The zoom lock is meant to prevent the zoom creeping indeed, you can lock it when the lens is in its wide-angle zoom setting (for carrying in the bag or over the shoulder when not in use I guess) ...
I have the Tamron and have been very happy since I got it about 6 months ago - the Tokina has better build, but much slower and louder AF (so I heard).
Get the Tamron - you won't be sorry.

Ditto -
Unfortunately I don't have the Tokina lens to compare the Tamron to however...
The Tamron was recommended to me by members of this forum and I purchased it about 6 months ago. It is a great quality lens for the price. I have no regrets and I do think you would either.
Good Luck,
Michael

I've heard nothing about the Tokina, either good or bad. But I've heard plenty of good about the Tamron. Based on that, I'd say that the Tamron would be the best choice.

I have a Tokins 287. Built VERY well and works well. The only nit is the zoom ring goes the opposite direction from the canon lenses I have.
Oh yeah, and I can EASILY turn the AF?MF switch on anf off. I cant say that about the Canon lenses. :)

Tamron. Mine is consistently as sharp or sharper than my 70-200/4L. Build quality and materials are only okay, but they provide an excellent warranty and the price is right.

I have and love the Tamron 28m to 75 F2.8. It is also a close focus lens you can come within 9 in of your subject. AS far as saying it's sharper then my 70 to 200 L F4 close, very close but the Canon still has the edge. For the money you can't get any better.
Here is a portrait from it

I used to have a tokina 28-80/2.8 atx pro. It was build like a tank, even better than my 28-70L but the lens used to front focus from 50-80mm and was soft till f/5.6. The tamron 28-75/2.8 I tried out was probably every bit as good as my 28-70 and no focusing problems. The only disadvantage was the focusing speed was slow compared to USM motors. I'd get a tamron any day over a tokina. I feel tokina spends all its money on the barrel and doesn't have anything left for the glass :)
