it has a great reputation but focus is slower than the 70-200's. Some say its sharper.

I have one. It is very sharp and focuses fast enough for me although its not USM. It's big and heavy but all 2.8's are like that. I got a steal on mine for $300 but one in good shape should be worth $500-$600. Photodo rates it higher than the current white model.

Be carefull what you buy
I've seen quite a few of that model with lens seperation problems. They all have the same look-inside the front elements there is what looks like condensation. Some assume it's a wierd type of fungus but it can't be cleaned off

I have owned mine since I bought it new many years ago. It is tack sharp all the way through. The lens is slightly slower than the newer ones, but nothing that will really slow you down even in sports shooting.
Since it is not USM, it is louder when focusing. The tripod mount is removable and a nice feature. I wish it was a white lens, but I'll take sharpness over that any day!

It is a superb lens in terms of optics. It is as sharp as the 70-200/2.8L. Unfortunately you may have problems if the lens elements are damaged or fungus infected. Canon may not have replacement parts. If you get a good one then it's worth it.
