Hey everyone!

I'm doing my homework on what to get in a few months to shoot mainly portraits at home with family and friends until I learn enough and feel confident about doing more.

I'm looking into getting strobes and AB's always came up, so I decided on getting the Beginner Bee package with the AB800. From all the reading I've done I'm also wondering what would be the best way to spend say $1000 including shipping and duty since I'm in Toronto.

The Only gear I have at the moment is...

Rebel XT
Canon 50mm 1.8, 100-400mm (which I may sell to pay for the strobes) 18-55mm.
2x Manfrotto midi Quick stands (I got these for free)

I'll be shooting in my basement which is limiting since the ceilings are only 7.5ft, not sure about the area space but it's cozy.

I know all about lenses so that is something I'll be looking into later on as well. I just wanted advice on a lighting set up.

Here's what I think I need...

B800 AlienBees B800-Deep Space Black $279.95
CB1 AlienBees Carrying Bag $12.95
HSA Hot Shoe Adapter $14.95
LS3050 10-foot General Purpose Stand $39.95
RBH2566 Reflector Kit Mounting Arm $29.95
RFT1RX Radio Flash Trigger One Receiver $39.95
RFT1TX Radio Flash Trigger One Transmitter $39.95
U48SW 48” Silver/White Umbrella $29.95

Total 611.72 Including ground shipping but before duty.
(I may be able to get my work to pay for shipping and I wouldn't ship it ground!)

I know I'll have to get a background stand and materials as well, so I've been going back and forth on whether the reflector kit would be worth getting, I know many people have used foam board or other materials as reflectors.

Prices here in Toronto are outrageous so shopping here for the extras isn't worth it IMO.

Right now I'm playing around with 2 500w work lights and using gift wrap tissue paper as a diffuser which is taped onto a pants holder I don't use anymore :)

Here are some examples...not the best, since I'm still learning :)

Anyway...I keep babbling here, any input would be appreciated.

You're missing the reflector(s) and the stand for the reflector(s). That reflector kit you have listed only includes the arm and clips to hold the reflector.

I would suggest a grid - 30º that will give you one more set of options for $30
