I've found Amazon and another location taking pre-orders for the 1DS MarkII. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=43324&start=60

Great. I'm still sore from selling a kidney for the 1D Mark II!

I'm at the edge of considering let a bunch of medic students perform experimental surgeries on me to make some money for a 1D MK II ... really don't need that news right now ...

I've been "blessed" to do it, but that doesn't make it any less painful. On the bright side, it is cheaper than the other option I must admit I did consider, which was medium format / scanning back combos. I decided I wanted one platform when possible. This camera gives me that possibility for what I want to do with it.

I conversed with BHPhoto who promptly told me they wouldn't be doing pre-orders and recommended not falling into that with others. I don't plan on pre-ordering but will wait until either my local camera store or BHPhoto has it in and available which I hope to be sometime next month or sooner. :)

Thankfully I won't have to sell any organs to obtain it but it's painful nonetheless. I've been planning on this purchase for a while, awaiting it's announcement for a few months now, watching the rumour sites daily..I guess as the old saying goes, No pain, no gain. :)

I have put my money where my mouth is and have ordered a Canon EOS 1Ds mark II from my local camera store, I have been told 3rd week in November most likely.

I consider this fairly reliable information in that:
I had asked about it yesterday and had let them know that I was definately getting it from them if they could get it before the end of December, maybe January, but if it is later then Feb I would probably just go online. Mainly because I thought they were already taking preorders for the camera (I have been traveling so have been a bit out of touch). Found out today from BH site, they were not yet taking preorders (or at least BH isn't yet). So I called to let my local store know that they could just put me on the list and tell me when it would be available.

Now for the good part; timing is everything. They had just finished talking with the Canon rep this morning, he left the store about 20 minutes before I called. He told them a Canon 1Ds Mk II would be available for them (meaning me) by the end of November, most likely by the third week in November. So they have it on order and it will ship in first batch (I like this camera store (Massey's in Williamsburg, VA) because they have a good relationship with their Canon sales rep). I trust their word because they have had at least a few D60, 10D, 300D and 20D available on day one. and in my case I got my 10D from them on Friday, while most people in the state got them on the next Monday. So when they say first batch, I tend to believe them. Although they did say yesterday they were out of 20D (they had gotten in 5 to start with) and could not get any more in, but that may have changed today; forgot to ask.

Now for the really, really good part. I had expected to pay a deposit, but since I have done business with them before (like 10D, 100-400L, 28-70L, 28-135IS, 2x extender and misc other stuff - you get the idea) they have not asked for a deposit as long as I pay them for it when it comes in or within the first few days of December if it comes in November.

And this is why; although I have to pay evil state sales tax (although cheaper the most states), supporting my local stores is a very good idea.

Just thought I would share my information and potential good fortune.

P.S. the cynic in me says Canon will of course ship so that the camera arrives after my November model shoot on the 21st.

I hope you get your Camera in time for your shoot! That would be great. I'd be elated if I could get mine during the month of november. I'll watch BHPhoto as they have a in-stock notification option. (which I put to my pager of course... :) )

Ready to put my money where my mouth is, I think about the same time Canon is ready to put a camera where there mouth is. :)
