Ok, it's been long enough. We all sit here surfing POTN and never meet up. I've met more guys from NYC, NJ, PA and TX than locally. That's sad.

So let's change all that.

Sunday, April 20th, 2008 is the annual camera swap meet/show in Burnaby at the Cameron Rec Center behind Lougheed Mall. It opens at 10am, early birds at 9 - $5 to get in @ 10. It is held in conjunction with a Nikon convention this year so we should shore up the Canon support and venture forth as pilgrims in an unholy land.

http://whistlerinns.com/camerashow/

There are lots of new products there that you might not be able to get your mitts on in other places. Used stuff is amazing.

Let's meet at 9am at the IHOP across the street (in the mall), have some grub, go up to the Swap Meet, then hit Skytrain to head to a TBD location (downtown I would assume) and shoot our butts off. A good late lunch could be had at any location.

Weather permitting of course.

Now if anyone REALLY wants to, we could drive out to Mission raceway the weekend after to cover the WMRC Motorcycle racing as well. Double Header POTN meet.

If you live within 4000 kms of Vancouver I expect you to be there. I just went to a POTN meet in NYC so let's give out a free breakfast to the person fartherst travelled. I got one from MDJAK in NYC and it's time to pay it forward.

April 20th is PLENTY of time for people to plan. Who's in?

Within 4000 miles of Vancouver? Normally I'd say you're nuts, but hey you did it a week a go. I would love to go, but realistically I can't. Perhaps Mark can go there and represent all of us NYCr's here. Have fun guys.

Perhaps Mark can "sponser" people from NYC?

I would love to go to that part of Canada...I always end up in the Ontario region. Pretty cool there too.

Probably a no go since I already have my vacation schedule booked up including a trip to Florida (uh...yeah...nice vacation...) and possibly to Japan.

I have to give it to you Jason...you the man...flying to NYC like that for the meet earlier this month!

It'll be great to actually take the time to know each other in this corner of the world.

Oh and I'd love to join you the next week end too. I should be able to take some people in my car too (if my wife/kids don't come along).

LeuceDeuce

Ok so it's not related to the meet, but where do the Metro Van folks get their photos printed?

Costco is cheap cheap cheap, but the colours are dark (yes my monitor is uncalibrated and I've got a Spyder3Pro on order to remedy that). I've looked at the Digital Lab, but their pricing seems overly expensive.

If you've used the lab can you tell me if the product is worth the price?

I've also looked at MPIX but if I'm not getting a bunch of prints made up the shipping charge to Canada seems steep. Obviously the relative cost goes down the more prints so that's an option.

Alternatives?

Technicare 100%.

I won't print my stuff ANYWHERE else. Their pricing is SUPER reasonable. Their Service is AMAZING, and needless to say, QUALITY blows away anything I've ever printed before elsewhere.

I'll be going to a lot of countries and cities actually. Should be lots of fun but hopefully not overwhelming since this is my first trip overseas. My friend and I are going to London, Paris, Barcelona, Nice, Rome, Florence, Venice, Vienna, maybe Switzerland, Rhine Valley, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam. 5 weeks. We may be trying to do too much but if we have the flexibility of leaving one country to another which will be pleasant.

I thought you still only need your drivers and birth certificate if you're driving over. I know that you need passport if you fly. Maybe U.S. need it to come into Canada even if you drive? I wouldn't think so.

I don't think getting into Canada is the problem, it's getting back into the US. I don't know what the current requirement is, they keep changing what is needed... better safe than sorry though.

Better safe than sorry for sure. I'm not an authority in these matters at all. All I know is that some of the guys from work here still don't have passports, and they go to Washington all the time. That's the only basis for my comments.

<AkulA>
5th of April 2008 (Sat), 02:04
I really should! But I could have sworn they changed it to where we have to have a passport. They are even offering this "special" drivers license that's endorsed so you don't have to carry your passport around all the time... but it's an extra $55!

BTW for those coming from the states, this MAY or may not be different for you, but I know for when we (canadians) are going down to the states we should stop in at the Canadian office and ask a customs agent for a Y38 form. This goes in your passport, and lists the serial numbers of your camera/lens. For goods without serial numbers, CBSA agents will give you a sticker to mark the product.

The Y38 form basically declares that you have in possession of those goods in Canada. So, if you are coming back into Canada and is questioned about your gear, you can show them the card to indicate that you had them when you left. They can still ask you for receipts and such if they want since it isn't checked when you get the form. But usually it will be enough.

They should make a shooting sport jacket, Macbeth lining and 17% grey shell. On a side not I live across from a kids school, maybe I can borrow that rope they use that all the kids hang onto when they go out on field trips. :)

Just had to make an unfortunate update here - I will be unable to attend :(

My best friend came back into town from Toronto and he's only got the one weekend here. We're going to take a trip down to Seattle and Portland for the weekend.

I'm pretty bummed. I marked this event on my calender and everything. I was thrilled to shoot with cosworth, thehoff, and the rest of the gang :(

I hope you all have fun!

West side of Lougheed Mall - Same entrance you'd use to go to the London Drugs.

I'm STILL negotiating with "She who must be obeyed" as to whether I MIGHT be able to make breakfast.

Doug, what boat you on?

depends on which day it is.

absolute kaos is my main boat. i do all of varc, wednesday nite racing, a lot of the winter series, and most extra special regattas on it. i am the bowman, but for our distance stuff i move around and end up trimming kite. every so often i will take a spell trimming upwind or driving.

zulu is my second boat. based in sidney, it does a limited schedule of 5 or so races, namely off events like round the county. i've done that race twice, and both times i've said never again after 40 knot knockdowns. this time i mean it, especially since i am doing vic maui on it. normally i am trimmer, both upwind and downwind, but for vic i am hanging out on the pointy end until shifts start.

i have an association with the america's cup boat il moro, ita-1, up on the north shore. when i am free from all other racing i knock about on that. with the crew being mainly guests of the owner, anyone with skill does important stuff on board. i do runners. kind of boring until you realize it's up to us to keep about $150000 worth of carbon sticking straight up.

and if i have any free time from that stuff, i boat slut. j109, 1d35, m242, yamaha 33, a few other dash 34s.. as long as it has good rum and/or cute girls, i go. i am trying to convince my skipper to go back to hobie 18s and win the north american championships again. they'll be held in harrison this year. we won in 97.

still waiting for my tp52 invite (mayhem or braveheart), the vogels to ask me to crew on strum, or an invite on a farr 40.
