View Full Version : Title: POTN G-series Speed Challenge #159 - Unusual Angle
BottomBracket
18th of February 2008 (Mon), 22:49
As usual, picking the top three out of a lot of entries is proving to be a big headache. All of the photos did show some extreme angle, some more so than others. In the end, the deciding factor was what I think I would like up on my wall. Still it wasn't easy, and I had to whittle it down from a handful to just three. As is always with this kind of challenge, the winners I pick reveal more about myself than anything else. Thanks for the entries, all.
The Winners!
Third Place: Ibook Abduction (Freeday) - Viewed from high up, off to an angle, this photo gained extra points for the whimsical element. Creepy finger shadow, strange alien green glow at that plug connector thingie (I'm not an Apple person, save for my iPod) gives me the chills.
Second Place: Let's Dance (Boutty) - Now this is what I'm talking about. Straight up angle, faces of people - this is one of the coolest ways to take a group photo. Sometimes I put my camera on a monopod, extend the camera way high up, with it aimed down, and I gather the group around me for an extreme bird's eye view shot. Back to this photo, I like the almost radial symmetry, and the message of unity in diversity.
First Place: Ukulele (Jannie) - I can barely make it, but the elements are there - the fret, the curved lines of the body, the colors. I am thinking that the angle is from the head of the instrument, aimed towards the fretboard. Jannie has not only taken this from an extreme angle, but in selecting a slow shutter speed added another dimension, time. I appreciate the effort to think outside the box. What more can I say? I am a sucker for abstract expressionism. By the way, here's an interesting video of my favorite ukulele player, Jake Shimabukoro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puSkP3uym5k)
Thank you all for participating! What's the next challenge, Jannie?
Challenge #159 - Unusual Angle
A friend reminded me recently that most photographers think in two dimensions when shooting, that is, most shots are taken at or near eye level. While these can produce excellent shots, there are times that moving the camera up or down extremely can take the photo out of the mundane and into a unique or dare say I fantastic capture.
So drop down to your knees to get that worm's eye view, or stretch your arms or mount your camera on a monopod to get that bird's eye view. Upside down, inside out, extreme side view, show me what you've got. Get your mind out of the X-Y axis and think about the Z this time. Good luck!

Wow, when did this change?
Can't find a discussion thread about this and the Challenge sticky from Don still says 640 pixels.
Not that I'm complaining as I always thought 640 was too small as is the 100kb upload size limit.

Congrats to the winners! Thoroughly enjoyed everyone's attempt here.
My shot, I need a bigger bathroom. Had to laugh some when thinking the instructions called for taking a picture from an unusual position. I was sitting on the john, ducking out of the picture for the camera alone portion. Only my shadow gives me away.

Kevan, that is an imaginative shot that you took. Hey wait, you said you ducked, so who's the guy on the right side? Thanks for sharing the circumstances of your photo shoot, everyone should do that. Oh, I think the WB is a bit off, unless your walls have a slightly pinkish tinge ;)

Doing these contest has certainly made me look at how I can take the ordinary and add some new dimension to it. Also, seeing all the others interpretation of the challenge just adds to the fun.

I just wanted to say that i like this concept allot. And i am looking forward to the next challenge.
But i use the challenges to keep me thinking about photography. So my plan is to only send in pictures i took during the week of the challenge. I know this is not required but it fits my purpose better.
About the picture i took.
I went for a walk in the woods and was thinking how to come up with something creative for this challenge. The idea i came up with was to take a picture of me typing the keyboard from a nice looking angle. (yeah and this was after an hour walk ;) )
Back home i set everything up and made some test shots. The pictures looked weak to me. So i tried getting some finger blurring in my picture by setting my shutter speed a bit longer. I was still not satisfied. Than i jumped some idea's around i my head and got the shadow idea.
I thought well if my picture turns out crap maybe i get some extra points for trying to be creative
So thx to BottomBracket for hosting and for boosting up my ego :)
Nice looking Gallery you have btw

Freeday, thanks for sharing your experience. It looks like you had fun in pursuing this challenge. Thanks too for the comment, much appreciated.
CJ, you did a good job with your entry. Though it can be viewed as an extreme angle shot, I think pano suits it better. That's just what I think though. Nice job in stitching, I couldn't find the seams. Does the G9 have a panoramic mode and did you use it, or did you do this in PP? Also, was this selective color? Or was the railcar grey in color. So many questions.... :)

Oh I didn't think it would win or anything; but I don't have alot of extreme angle stuff to show.
The G9 has a panoramic mode but I didn't use it; just used manual took a few pics real quick and stitched them together in CS3. CS2 sucks at this by the way,,, but CS3 does a good job usually...
Yes, that was the color of the car,, although I made some obvious changes in the curves, saturation, etc.

I'm startled, it's the first time I've ever really entered anything like this and the first time I've ever really gotten into that kind of shooting, have tried blurry stuff a tiny bit before. I started with a simple shot of my Uke (by the way, I watch UTube of Jake S. playing his Uke often)
I must have taken 75 photos of my Uke over the period of a couple of days until I came up with 3 or 4 I liked. I really didn't think this would win anything but I really, really liked it.
I tried getting it really sharp in the center, blurring it more, moving the focus around, really long shutters and short with fast moving camera. This one was a combination of holding onto the Uke and twist and panning it with one hand while moving the camera with the other. Boy were there a lot of terrible shots but I was having so much fun, probably the most fun I've had with a camera in quite a while.
Congrats to freeday and Boutty, and also to those who didn't win, I really noticed that there is a lot to learn from how others take on these assignments. And Bobsyouruncle your photo makes me laugh hard every time I see it.
Bestest, Jannie

Well done ALL - I've also enjoyed your entries tremendously. :p
Congrats to Jennie & Freeday for their winners.
Thanks Pio for putting up the excellent challenge topic. You have taught and reminded another great lesson. For this challenge, I thought surely I would have found some pictures to meet the criteria, boy I was wrong. To make matter worst, I'd managed to find one that suited, but then when I saw your comment about the image "the message of unity in diversity" I realised I have entried the same image in Challenge #38 - PEACE (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=108015). So please feel free to forfeit my placing. :o
Anyway, about my picture, if I remembered correctly (it was almost three years ago),I have managed to avoid laying on the floor to compose the shoot by using the swivel LCD screen of my beloved G6. The models had enjoyed the chocolate Freddo I rewarded them after. ;)

Second place again; it seems judges think alike :) :) .
Do not worry, Boutty, only pictures that won the first place before must not be entered again.
No special comments on the ‘how to’ of my entry this week, it was just a standard shot.

Thanks Maureen. It's from my butterfly garden that was planted in summer 2007 -- now a certified Monarch Waystation. I am looking forward to it's second year and adding more.
BTW -- I really liked the winning photo as well as a few that caught my eye: Marie, alans220, and lukeeesteve. Those old Pro1 and G-series really hold their own. I need to get my recently purchased G2 into the mix soon.
Good luck all on the next challenge.
