My nephew, Noah, was born prematurely at 30 weeks on January 23rd, 2008. In addition to being premature, he also had severe muscular dystrophy. He was taken off life support on February 11, 2008 and passed away about 45 minutes later.
It was a very heart wrenching day. I was at the hospital with my sister-n-law and her husband during this time and took some portraits of Noah before he passed away so that she could have something to remember her beautiful little boy.
She really loved the portraits and was greatful that I took them for her.

This is the pure essence of photography.
It is not just a sharp photo, but it has meaning, its full of emotion, it has a story behind it.
It cannot be reproduced, it is a moment in time that lives because of the camera.
Thank you for sharing your memories, and sorry to hear about the loss.

After doing this, I felt the need and signed up with NILMDTS as well. I'm also in the process of signing up with Think Pink Photography which is a similar organization for families whos lives/loved ones have been touched by breast cancer. The week that I was in Chicago shooting the portraits of my nephew, I received a call from my Mom letting me know that my Aunt was in the hospital undergoing a masectomy because they discovered she had breast cancer. She is doing well now and is undergoing chemotherapy. She has 3 more treatments and then she will be well.

My deepest sympathies to you and your family. All loss is tragic but a loss of this kind .. there are no words.
How grateful they will be to have those treasured moment caught on film and how special that you did that for them. After a premature birth, my daughter, Hannah, passed away shortly after birth. I was 6 months pregnant. My heart will always hold thanks to the hospital for being prepared as \i was able to capture my daughter on film to cherish for always. They gave me a disposible camera. :)

Thank you for your kind words.
Sadly, this past wednesday I was called to the hospital to take pictures of a baby born prematurely at 25 weeks. He was only a pound, so tiny. I'm not sure of his circumstances, but I felt so badly for the parents. Here are some images of Eli Wiley...

As a mom to a 28-week preemie (and now living the hardships of being pregnant after preemie - now 20 weeks) I know how valuable these photos are to the families.
Thank you for doing this - I hope that if we need it this time around that we can find a photographer who can do as nice a job as you.

Yes, I am part of the NILMDTS organization. I signed up after returning home from my Nephew's funeral this past february. I have since done 2 sessions for other grieving families. It is heart wrenching, but very rewarding to be able to give this gift to families in need. My heart goes out to those families who suffer the loss of their child. I can only imagine how I'd feel, but I know that I would want something to remember my baby. I am thankful that I am able to give them this gift.
