for what it's worth this lens gets a 2.4 on Photodo. I'd take these scores with a large grain of salt.

I have one of them.
Very nice at the 100mm end, a bit soft at the 300mm end.
Nice quick AF, very nice to use / hold.
For my limited use of 300mm zooms, suits me well.
It's a step above the 75-300, but is not an L, that's for sure.

I have this lens on order, should be here tomorrow. After I wring it out a bit, I'll post what I think about it.

Like was said, it is not an L lens but I like mine enough that I kept it eventhough I have its length covered with higher quality lenses right now. It is small and light so it is more portable then my Sigma 70-200 2.8. Here are a couple of shots taken with it.

hmmm
do u guys take the extra 100mm and the price difference of this lense over the 70-200L F4?
or take the 70-200L F4 over this lense even though it's 2x more in $$$ and 100mm less?

Optically the 100-300 is quite good up to 200mm. Not the same calibre as the 70-200 f4L, granted, but not awful either.
I did consider the 70-200 f4, but I wanted the extra reach of the 300, and it was twice the price. In the end, the 100-300 won out, for those reasons.
It is better than the standard Canon 75-300. It is better than the cheap Sigmas 70-300s etc. But it's not an L, like the 70-200 f4.

I've got the 100-300.. It's nice and light and I carry it when I don't want to be weighed down by equipment. It also makes a pretty good macro lens with a 58mm Canon 300D close up lens attached.
My main complaint is that it's somewhat prone to purple fringing when taking shots with very bright highlights.. (Sun glinting off chrome or water etc). As others say, it's a bit soft at 300. It's definitely not an L lens... but it doesn't have the L price either :)

I took this photo with the Canon 100-300 lens. It is a bit soft @ 300mm but what do you expect for such a cheap lens.
