in portrait photogprahy?

i looked in the tutorials list, but the link to it is a tip of the week link on lightsright studio website. so it changes every week :(

can anyone direct me to a good tutorial on softening facial features? thanks!

Try slection and smart blur,. the heal brush, the smudge brush and clone tools too.

another quick way to do it...

1. duplicate layer
2. blur that layer with gaussian blur (3-6)
3. lower opacity to get effect you want
4. erase away parts of blurred layer that you want sharp (eyes, mouth, hair, background?, etc)

thats wat i did b4, but does it give the same effect as the technique stated on the light's right website?

Those steps are what one would call a 'basic glamour' softening (or something like that). Maybe I miss understood what you wanted. To reduce unwanted facial features (wrinkles, blemishes, etc), you can try this... it is along the same lines of the technique on the lights right website and what CDS suggested.

1. Duplicate layer
2. Use clone and heal tool to remove whatever blemishes, wringles, etc you want. When I say remove, I mean remove completely. That will leave the photo looking a bit fake.
3. Adjust the opacity of that layer to bring back some of the details

ahh so that's what the heal tool is used for
