I haven't been to an air show in 10+ years so I think we would really enjoy it.

I've always loved taking photos of the Red Arrows at various events, and hopefully the 400 f/2.8 (and 2.0x) will serve me well.

I'll be there both days, Grandstand on Saturday.

Could say that. Their website (design) and logo are my creations, and I supply them with photos too. Might have one or two in the programme/brochure this year.

Well I went to Duxford a few weeks ago with my 100-400 and a lot of the time it wasn't long enough, hence taking the 500 to Kemble.
However, I'm also going to RIAT for the first time and don't really know what to take there

If you've got the 500 take it with, you can never have too much lens for A/C!!

might be hard following the jets with a 500 tho? i've not handled one but i'm sure it's heavy!
i was at riat last year but i can't remember much of it :-P

I'm thinking the weather will be better on Sunday
BBC weather says: http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/images/symbols/fiveday_sym/3.gif
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?world=4105

We may be parking in the disabled area because of my boy, which is apparently quite far away from the main ground attractions but has less crowds, so might be better for waving big lenses around.

you're right - weather tomorrow will be better apparently. it was cloudy today and windy and cold (and i managed to get a sunburn on my neck - can you believe that?)

for some reason, i wasn't impressed with it as i was when i last went to it some years back...but it was a nice day out and my baby enjoyed the planes!
i definitely can't wait for riat tho i hope it'll be sunny!

post your pics on here!!! i'm staying with my mom so can't edit my pics!

Here are some from a grey Saturday......

I expect to see better from Sunday with nice blue skies and fluffy clouds.

The 500 is perfect for most airshows. It gives plenty of throw and focus is really quick. It seems to pick up a wing root very well even at f4. My only complaint is the weight. In most circumstances it is great to hand hold and I can go all day not worries. BUT when the wind picks up, that lens turn into a sail...

When I get my next large L it will probably be the 500...

Great selection of shots Scuff :)

I was there with my 1DIII + worn 120-300 (and tried 1.4tc, but autofocus not working.. and also not focussing properly without - keeps zooming back to minimum focus and jamming. Needs a new AF system :o)

A shame about the grey skies, makes for some unexciting photos, compared to some blue skies I saw at Shoreham last year

Great Panning Shot Wazza.

It looks like you were a lot further down the runway than me. I was right it the top where they were all maneuvering for take off.

As you say, pity about the skies, but beggars can't be choosers :(

Two from yesterday. lighting was tricky- better by the end of the day.

When I got home, I discovered my sensor was extremely dusty!

A couple of bangs from the show.

I tried to be ready for these, but, when they were going to blast, caught me a bit off guard

Nice shots MStar.

I was tracking the incoming Tornado's when the bangs went off behind me. Didn't 'arf make me jump!!!! Thank god for 'IS'.

Trouble is, the smoke drifted over to the press tent and we were all coughing like 60 a day smokers. (except those who are 60 a day).

, Tell me about it. I and everyone near me were tracking the Tornados and then boom, my camera just about went flying.

Thanks mate - I was half way between the commentators booth/videographer on stand, and the grandstand, standing on the taxiway. Plenty of Canon photographers nearby, but didn't see anyone with POTN neck straps.

Thanks - not sure about Farnborough yet - I've got that entire week off, but set that aside for travelling around Europe. F22 though.. That could draw me

^^ Wazza - i was standing right in behind of the parked old plane they flew (i can't remember the name)
the videographer was to my left...standing on top of his van.

and to my right was a guy with a canon and 1-4 lens with a homemade bushhawk mount which i thought was excellent! i was gonna talk to the guy and take a pic of his mount but got shy! :-P

Here's a few of mine - not overly happy with them. Discovered on Saturday that my 20D sensor is REALLY filthy, so have ordered a cleanng kit for that. Reverted to the 300D on Sunday and spent the afternoon outside once the light had moved round, but the location for that generates a lot of heat haze and pics aren't great...

Hi Daniel

Nice set of images, as for the effects of haze (heat or otherwise) some simpleish USM PPing can 'cut' through it AOK in my opinion but YMMV. But without your editing permission I will not take the liberty ;)

Daniel_B
9th of June 2008 (Mon), 19:09
They came out OK with my normal editing, but the originals aren't as sharp as I'd like. Had the same problem in similar conditions at that location last year using a 100-400L, and a few of my mates using much better glass than me have also said they'd struggled with the haze.
