I just finished uploading my photos from my s400 into my photo editing/organization program, and one of the photos it tried to import it said was corrupted. So I went into the camera directory and manually brought it onto my hard drive. When I opened it in Photoshop, this is what it looked like:

This is completely unaltered. Saved right out of Photoshop. Any ideas what could have caused something like this or why it's happening? Is it the CF card or camera? And BTW this is the first time this has happened to me, I've never seen this before. Thanks for your help!

Currupted file writing... sometimes due to low battery.

I've seen thsi same thing out of my Old Olympus 2100UZ... it woud happen when the batts were dieing.

Just a guess.

Hmm, I highly doubt that it was due to low battery, because I had just placed a freshly charged battery into the camera. And I am still using the same battery charge to shoot now, without any charge issues. I guess it was just a mess-up from the camera?

Could have been an error writing TO the card, or READING from the card. I once had an error on a Kodak camera similar to that but, after reloading the file from the card, everything was fine.

Try down loading it from the camera again.

After I had downloaded the picture to my computer, I shut off the camera, restarted it, and turned it on in playback mode. It wouldn't even let me view the picture. It said "Corrupted Data" when I tried to view the picture. So I think it was definately something to do with writing to the CF card.

If this happens again, have the camera inspected (with the card and corrupt file.)
If you still have the file on the card, you might want to just send it in now, and have it checked out...

That's when the jpeg file is corrupted.
Try this : Take a jpeg that is not corrupted, take a hex-editor, somewhere in the middle of the file, where the data is, replace some of the bytes by 00, save it.
Then open it in a viewer, same effect as yours...

This can happen when the CF has a problem or one bit on the card has been altered (magnetic influence for example).
If it happens again, You'd better give the CF-card to the museum or if you have warranty on it (like the sandisk : life-long warranty) send it back and get a new...

The viewer telling you the picture is corrupted probably has calculated the checksum of the data and found that it wasn't equal to the original.
