i was able to upgrade my 20D to 1.04 with no problems what so ever...
works perfectly...im happy with it...
but since i dont have any planned shoots this weekend, the other night i decided to upgrade the firmware again to 1.05 to my surprise i couldnt do it. i get an error everytime.
i downloaded the exe file 6 times already...expanded it on the harddrive and loaded it to the CF card in different ways. thru a card reader/writer. thru the usb2.0 cable supplied with the camera. even tried expanding the exe directly to the CF card (1GB sandisk ultraII same one i used to upgrade to 1.04)
ive formatted the cf card in the camera itself...also tried formating on the PC with windows XP. (before copying the file to the cf)
nothing works.
has anyone had this problem im experiencing?

Try resetting all settings, and all custom functions.
Worth a shot.

Did you reformat the card. and then erase all folders in it. My 20 D wont update until I do it.
Also did you have the camera in the P mode, you can get an error if you do that also.

Yup, what Phili1 said...
And, remove any lens.

yes i actually did all those things...
erased everything...kept everything after format from the camera...
error says something like, "cant find working upgrade file in the cf card"
all attempts to upgrade to 1.05 is without lens btw.
also maybe its worth noting that when i upgraded my 20 from original version to 1.04, i have the 24-70 2.8L lens attached to it which when i read the manual for the 1.05 upgrade i shouldnt have done so as it may have killed my cam...am glad it didn't kill it...but could it have caused the problem that now i can't upgrade to 1.05?

I doubt that would affect it. What exactly does the error say?

Did you unzip the file? (This is a self extracting archive) If so, unzip the file to your CF card," check out if this is on the CF card after unzip 20D00105.fir" , and set the camera in "P" mode.
Good Luck

Are you sure you have the file in the root directory of the CF card?

Make sure that CF card is empty before you put the .fir file on it. also, what size card are you using? I assume you read the instructions about using certain cards. I don't remember but think a 1GB is ok but a 2 or 4 may not be. I'd check the instructions and make sure you're ok there. Also, besides the lens, take the grip off and make sure your battery is fully charged.
Otherwise, you may need to give Canon a call and see if they can troubleshoot your problem. It may be something so simple we are all overlooking it.
Best of luck!

What exactly do these upgrades address? If I have encountered no problems, is there any reason to upgrade?

Go to the page where you can download firmware v1.0.5 (http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eos20d/eos20d_firmware-e.html) and read the information. With version 1.0.4, there was a chance that the camera could become almost permanently locked up.

Everybody thought it was for just a lock up problem, but it fixes a lens compatability problem that 1.0.2 had as well as CF cards.
Canon says that it is a good Idea to do it because a problem could crop up later.
Anyway does your Camera operate. Does it take pictures. If it does then it is not dead.If it does not then it must go back to canon.
I had a problem because I did not follow the instructions, it wount not load it.
Step one make a new folder Download 20 D. Down load to this folder.
Remove lens
Put you CF Card in Camera and reformat it.
Put your card in card reader and delete all folders.
Go to your download folder double click the zip. When it ask save to where browse to the CF card in your reader.
Next shut off you camera, put it in P mode, put CF card in and turn on Camrea, go to menu to firmware hit set and do what it tells you. When it is finished shut off Camera take out battery, put it back in and turn it on it should be ok then.
Hope this does it for you, if not back to Canon.

BTW, camera is still working 100% with 1.04 firmware, just can't seem to upgrade it to 1.05
cf card used is sandisk ultra II 1GB. this is the same card i use to upgrade it to 1.04. i used the same card tonight to upgrade my old 10D to 2.01 from 2.00 no problems at all. in any case, i also tried a 256mb cf card and a 512mb (twinmos and ridata respectivly) both still no go.

If Your camera works fine with 1.0.4 there is no need to upgrade to 1.0.5.
The only difference between the 2 is the bug that could cause a dead camera when upgrading to 1.0.4. Since You have 1.0.4 now the 1.0.5 makes no difference.

ok Greyunit, if your camera is working then it should take the upgrade, so lets star over.
Go to your C drive and put a new folder called 20 D Firmware.
Go to this site and down load the firmware fix into the 20 D Firmware folder.
Take your lens off the Camera.
put your 256 M CF card into it and reformat it.
Next put the Cf card in your Card reader. Go to my computer, open the Card reader folder and delete the Canon file.
Now go to the 20 D Folder and double click of the zip file. When the window comes up go to browse and open the drive that the card reader is on and select it.
Now make sure the Camera is off and lens is off and put the Cf card into the Camera and turn it on.
Now go to firmware and click set and follow instructions. When it finishes shut Camera off and remove the battery completly for a count of four and put it back in. Turn Camera on go to firmware and it should read 1.0.5.
Sometimes when you down load from the web it get corrupt. Oh also sut off your Norten virus, it can effect downloads some times if it thinks it is a virus.
Try this and see if it helps.
