I ordered a Canon G9 on line and received my invoice by email. Later that night a salesman called and asked about my credit card verification, a plod to sell me more. Do you need a battery (no) a memory card (no) 3 yrs extended warranty (no).
Received another invoice with a $69.95 battery added to the total. Called customer service and they offered a $40.00 discount off the bill. Mummm.
Received camera & battery, battery is a $19.95 item, not a $69.95 item. Canon sells their's for about $47.
So a $40.00 credit, a $19.95 I am still paying $29.95.
What a ripoff company (Abe's Of Maine) A am sending it back, but had to box it, go to post office and pay shipping.

They'll probably charge you a restocking fee, plus you are going to pay another $5-10 to box and ship it back; might just cut your losses and keep it. Next time use BH or adorama.

Sorry to hear. There a a lot of out right scam sites/sellers and some questionable sellers.
Resellerratings.com has good reviews of online sellers and checking there before hand can give you more idea about the seller.
I do agree that B&H is a top notch company/store. Amazon is also good too with no funny business.

Might want to keep resellerratings.com in mind for future purchases.
Abe's of Maine doesn't exactly have stellar ratings (although they appear to be getting better than in the past)

Atleast you got the camera instead of the usual "Sorry since you don't want our overpriced items the camera is now out of stock"

I purchased a Canon 20d three years ago from them with no problem. Looks like they changed the way they do business.

Popular Photography did a story about these New York photo dealers. You should check it out. Also they did a great story on eBay batteries and Memory Cards.

Hmmmm. I had always thought that Abe's of Maine was in the reputable group, but those tactics are right out of the Brooklyn scammer playbook.
The camera comes from Canon with a battery, so anyone who tries to sell it separate is a scammer.

instead of sending it back on your dime, call your credit card company and tell them that there was an unauthorized charge. It is then up to the store to pay for the return shipping

It is places like this that make me mad as a Small business Retailer. They sell cameras below cost tell you they have stuff in stock then tell you its back ordered and sit on your money unless you hound them. The sell the stuff that should come with the camera for 3 times over retail but you get your camera for $30 bellow the little guy.

I bought an L lens from B&H a couple of weeks ago. I found out the day after I bought it, that there was a discount code for that particular lens. It was now a Friday afternoon, and B&H was closed. So I called on Monday and asked about the discount code. The customer service person placed me on hold while he researched the discount code.
When he came back on the line, he told me they would honor it, and rebate me the difference. No arguments, no haggling.
I go back there because they have always treated me right. :)

Their user reviews (http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Abe_s_of_Maine) at resellerratings.com are somewhat mixed and include experiences such as you report.

I just bought a G9 from Abe's earlier this month (my G7 died). Placed the order via telephone to ensure it would ship the same day. Order taker asked all the usual upsell questions. I shut him up when I said "I already have a G7 with all the accessories I need. Do you want to sell me the camera or not?" He said yes and that it would ship that day. Had a minor glitch in the shipping due to weather in Louisville (was shipped overnight via UPS, nothing to do with Abe's), but other than that got it to my door for $465. Local retailer wanted $469 plus tax, but was out of stock.
I've purchased several things from Abe's of Maine and had really no trouble. Yeah, they do attempt to upsell, but if you just ask them "Do you want the sale or not?", you can usually short circuit them. They aren't B&H, but they have done a good job for me when I have used them.

But why order from them when the try to upsell, as there are several shops that won't. I won't reward a bad vendor.
I keep shopping with Adorama because they consistently have shipped correctly and quickly, the website is easy to navigate and the gear is described well.

Adorama over the phone hasn't tried to upsell you? Or were your purchases all by the internet store?
