flash photography with mark 2 ....Im having trouble...

I have started to go from medium format to digital. I shoot with a Mark 2.
I find NO consistency shooting during a party. Too dark, too light...
I have tried Program, and manual....

Any words of encouragement...and tips....????

Which flash are you using?? What are your settings you are using on the flash??
