I am starting on my Simpleviewer gallery.

What is a good size (range?) for my photos to be? I want to be able to show detail, but at the same time not eat bandwidth and also have the gallery load fast.

If anyone could give me some idea it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

I save most of mine for web viewing at 800 on the long side (so usually 800x533 or 533x800) at jpeg 10 in photoshop

800 long side.

Anything above that and you need to have a really wide (90% width+) website to display them properly, and even modern widescreen monitors are rarely more than 1000 pixels on the tall side, so 1024x768 in portrait *never* fits monitors.

3rd to go with 800 on the longest side.

I wish SimpleViewer had a script that Auto sized pictures for the visitors computer resolution.
