View Full Version : Pets playing sports....

Do you have a picture of your pet playing a "sport" or working? Whether it's running, jumping, chasing, herding, hunting, agility.....or whatever...please share a pic here.
I'll get things started with my dog Luke. He's an Aussie and like most Aussies, he has a very strong "work" drive. One of his various jobs is cathing the Frisbees that fly around our back yard. It's somewhat comical to watch him because he takes the game so seriously....his focus is totally on the "job" at hand...In fact, I think he would chase those Frisbees until he fell over from exhaustion if I let him.

My two Chocolate Labs learning to catch a big ball. Callie is the first and Faith is the second. Callie definitely jumps higher, and has more style than Faith. They both catch frisbees too.

LOL...nice pics...I can't say that I've ever seen a dog chasing a ball that big. :)

Oh, this is a neat idea for a thread. I've got a few from a Schutzhund seminar that a friend of mine (Kazee) and I went to earlier this year. These are quite amazing dogs.

I've got a few equine athletes as well - these are some dressage horses from a recent show. The second is a familiar client of mine, and a very unique horse, rescued from the racetrack and learning to do high level dressage.

Great pics Jessica :) The dogs are great but your horse pics are absolutely beautiful. Great story on that second horse.....it's always nice to hear a story of a rescued animal excelling after others have wrote him off. Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks. He's a really amazing horse. I am glad that his story had a happy ending, because so many times, they don't. He is so talented too, which goes to show you that fancy breeding isn't always anything (though I'm sure he had fancy breeding for an entirely different purpose).

I wanted to give this topic another chance...We got off to a good start but it fizzled out. I know that there have got to be more of you guys/gals that have nice action pics of your pets engaged in some type of sporting or working activity. Please share your pics :) I'll go ahead and put up a pic of my other dog running through the snow....I know, not much of a sport but other than chasing squirrels, that's what she does :)

I just posted these in another thread looking for some feedback. I know I've posted in this thread already but instead of catching a ball, here they are playing keep-away. :D

Again, not exactly a sport, and definately not the best pic of her, but this is Bailey my Border Collie chasing a squirrell. Yes, I realize she is looking up-this is after she has successfully treed it and is now following it throught the tree branches! I think I have the only dog in town that when you take her for a walk, she walks around looking up in the trees!

LOL....great pic. One of my dogs is absolutely obsessed with squirrels. When I let her out in the backyard, the first thing she does is run out and look through the trees. On walks in our local park, her main goal is to find and chase squirrels. She won't fetch, chase a ball, or catch a frisbee but she'll chase squirrels.

Welcome to POTN! It's great to see another frisbee dog :) My only suggestion would be to bump up the exposure a bit to really show off the whites.

Oh, I love dock dogs! I'd really enjoy getting my dog into that. I think he would have a good time with it. There's a group a couple hours from me, but I just haven't had the chance to play with it with all the other stuff I'm doing.
That's some serious air (as already mentioned) and some very nice shots. I hear you about not ever taking pictures of your dog since you are the handler. I've got a bazillion shots of other people's dogs doing activities, but not so many of my own on the field.

I really like watching dogs do agility, as they obviously love it so much, but it's the weave that impresses me the most, especially when it's a larger dog and they step their front legs through each pole, left-right-left-right, rather than leading with both front paws together.
Always threatened to take my dog to agility classes...must see about that this year.

Those are nice photos.
I could never get my dog to catch anything but pieces of flying steak.
My wolf girl has passed on now, but...
I may end up with some photos to post here if my cat continues acting like he has.
Anyone want to see photos of a cat playing paintball?
(I'm only joking).

You described their style perfectly. One of my dogs (the one pictured above) was faulted in December for 'unsafe' weaving. The judge claimed he was going too fast. Frustrating because teaching those fast poles was not easy.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post this here but here is the video:

Sure :) I have a toy like that for my dogs also...They crack me up watching them chase the thing all over the room trying to get it to "spit out" a treat.

I think so as that pooch is definitely determined--those crunchies are NOT going to escape  Very nice.

Weird thing is my other dog cannot catch a frisbee, ball or whatever but can snag popcorn thrown at any angle. This one, Charlie, cannot catch popcorn. The vet said that may mean he might be slightly nearsighted. Flying steak would certainly get my dogs' attention too :D

It's possible I guess, (that she could have been near sighted). I've been thinking about it since posting, and maybe it was that she was just too gental. She was a wolf hi-bred, and since a small pup she sure looked at me as the alpha. lol Being a hi-bred of the sort, as a pup I bit her on the beek to show her who was domanant. I figured since any claim of her nipping would result in the state ordering her to be destroyed, I wanted to be sure she saw me as the alpha and humans as her pack. She was such a good dog. I live in a "city" so it's claimed, of about 15,000, but very limited square miles, and I used to let her run without a leash, 1/2 the time I didn't even watch her. She would only stay in the yard she was allowed to be in, and everyone could just tell she was friendly. The neighborhood loved her, (but no-one knew she was a chow / wolf... I waned no-one to know). I used to feed her from my fork, and she'd NEVER touch the metal. Would never play with any toy my son gave her unless I gave her the OK. I even layed a steak on the kitchen floor and left for an hour to see what she'd do. I came home to find her nose the same 6 or so inches from it as when I had left. I felt bad for her after that. LOL She'd track a ball, and be right there when it hit. She'd then cuff it and only look at me waiting for me to come throw it again. I could never get her to catch it. She was great catching bubbles, flies, and meat... nothing more. Flies... that's gross.
I don't mean to ramble, and my rambling may not be very fitting to this post. I just miss her alot. It's been a little over a year now... I guess I should be over it already... but I guess I'm not. Oneday I'll get another... when I do not feel like I'm replacing her.
Until then.... the photos I see here will be enough. ;)
You know... I really feel like deleting all that I have just wrote. However I believe one should be at ease in expressing how they feel, and not regret it. I'm sure many people have felt that way about their four legged family members, and if anyone here has felt foolish in the past for not being able to simply let go of a pet, well... there is no need to say anything, only know that I'm one person whom in noway thinks you were being childish or silly.
Cook the cats, keep the dogs. Just kidding... kinda... my kitten is watching what I type. ;)
