what are they? i know they are digital camera that are $$$$$ as h3ll... and lots of megapixels.. but what are they used for and the advantages of them over DSLR's? do they have interchangable lense?

They can be used on medium format cameras and offer the same advantage as medium format film over 35 mm film ... a larger film (sensor, in this case) area. All things equal, this results in higher MP and image quality. Downsides, they are pretty slow compared to DSLR's. In film, this very often limits their use to studio photography.
Because of the larger sensor, they are also a lot more expensive than good DSLR's.

Digital backs are not relevant to the Canon EOS system, which is what this forum is about. About the only place they are used is on a medium format film camera to transform it into a medium format digital camera.

A digital back isn't a camera. It's a camera acessory.
Digital backs are made to mount on the backs of various film cameras. (Hence the term back). They have a digital sensor that is held in place where the film would normally be and the necessary circuitry and memory required to capture and store pictures. Put more simply, digital backs turn film cameras into digital cameras.
Try google for "digital back".. There's plenty on them..

ahhhh now i understand. whats the point? wouldnt 1Dsmk2 dslr's be better?

Digital Back isn't that what you get for using a DSLR on too short a tripod. :lol:
