View Full Version : So, how many of you care more about how YOU look than how your pictures look?

Okay, you're out in public taking some pictures, and everyone is looking at you because you stand out, your camera makes you stand out. Everyone is making comments, and maybe you're feeling a little proud of the attention. Before you know it, you've become more concerned with how to please your audience than how to please yourself with good pictures. Sound familiar?

So how many of you have become more concerned with how you look while you're shooting than how your pictures look? Be honest now, there's no shame, it's all in good fun. :D

I'll be honest, I think I'm always more concerned with how I look than the pictures I take. Hell, I almost always shoot with sunglasses which really doesn't make any sense, especially since they're polarized. What I see in the viewfinder is never what I see in the LCD for this reason. Of course hoods block out flare and protect your lens, but who cares! They make the lenses look more beastly! That's the only reason I use hoods. I'll even put the flash on while shooting in bright sunlight just to look more intimidating.

I’m the opposite. I could care less what others think of me while I’m out shooting. In fact, if I could blend in and become invisible, I would. I wish I could have smaller gear and less of it especially when doing street photography. Nothing takes away a candid moment more than a big white lens pointed your way.

My shots sucks, so better to be worried about myself.

My photos of course. Although I typically always look good, even on my bad days  I still don't care. Look at my camera bag I use. It's quite obvious I don't care.

As long as I look better than MDJAK, I'm doing well.

But yes, I polish my shoes, own cufflinks and have more than one watch.

Interesting thought Calzinger...I can't deny feeling proud when someone looks @ my camera with awe on their face.

If you saw how I dress when I'm out shooting, you'd know the answer to that question. ;) For example:

I don't feel right if I'm out shooting without a baseball cap on!

_aravena
20th of February 2008 (Wed), 13:53
It's becoming more and more a habit for me. I feel like paparazzi though sometimes or someone for a magazine or paper. I'll wear my happy like normal but when I see something and start shooting it goes back and I start shooting quick. Wearing casual clothes with batteries or memory cards in my pockets doesn't help.

So easy to draw crowds. I was in London recently at night, within a minute about 10-15 had crowded around my tripod, 1DIII and Sigma 120-300 to see me pointed towards Big Ben. A further minute, and 3 security were there telling me to leave.
I always wear casual clothes, no caps - hate the hat hair

^Mine's too short to notice. Hair that is. Yeah, I go unnoticed with my POS bag but when I pull out that 70-200 everyone is looking. I love having that thing already attached to my camera.

I shoot in a friends army surplus jeep standing with one hand on the roll bar and the other spraying shots off. I wear nothing but army fatigues, balaclava and a bandolier for my CF cards. So I'd have to say it's all about the work for me. ;)

Actually I don't have a Photog outfit, I wear my every day clothes.

That's why I hate to be conspicuous. I would much rather blend. I really wish one of these camera guys would come up with a system the size of a P/S but the capabilities and quality of a SLR. I would be so there. I have absolutely no love of big heavy bags and lenses. All I want is IQ. Give me IQ in a small package and all this crap goes.

Based on these poll results, I'd say most POTN'ers are butt-ugly! ;)

Well your appearance is part of what will sell you as a photographer to potential clients. For me the way I look ranks very high on the list. I always look like Mr. GQ and wouldn't have it any other way. I don't own a t-shirt other than several white ones used as undershirts. All of the other shirts I own are either polo shirts or button up dress shirts. I think I may own 3 pair of blue jeans and the rest are khakis or slacks. I do have a lot of khaki shorts for the summer time but none of which are cargo style. In todays world the professional must be concerned at all times with his / her appearance. Even if it is just running to the store to get some milk. You never know when you will meet your next client.

I always try to dress the part to what im shooting. If its a wedding then I will dress up. The last shoot I did was 2 weeks ago of a local professional Bowler so I wore a bowling shirt that was 2 sizes to small for me and held a beer in one hand and my camera in the other . J/K I actually wore Kahki pants and a long sleeve button shirt. I think you should always look professional. You never know who is watching and needs a photographer.

I shot an affair this weekend, saturday night. My wife says to me, you're wearing a suit, right? I'm like, uh, no friggin way. You should, she says. I said, please don't tell me how to dress. Even my mother didn't do that.

I wore dark trousers and a black silk shirt. Only problem was my ThinkTank belt system was purchased about 30 pounds ago and was falling down on me. That was annoying. Eventually just took it off.

No. I don't dress to draw attention, but I certainly don't put on a show.

You shot an affair? So are you a private investigator or do you work for one? Black sounds like a good choice if you want to blend with the background and not be noticed.

I totally agree with Tandem about knowing which side of the lens I should be on, so I don't really care about what I look like when shooting. Generally, I'm in one of three locations: on the ground, in the water, or up on top of something

I've been known to photograph water patterns on concrete walls with people staring at me and making weird comments.
I really don't give a toss as to what people think, all I'm concerned about is getting the shot and then getting home so I can get them on the computer.

Even my partner thinks I'm weird sometimes while out shooting....that is until she sees the results.

I just realized that it might not be the camera that draws the attention.

I just found my reflection in one of my pictures.

I really need to relax some more in my shoulders and look less like the Hunchback from Notre Dame...

I just wear everyday clothes. I don't want to be seen or have any attention. I like to shoot nature/animals at the park the last thing I want is some parent screaming "PEDIPHILE!!" cause they think I'm shooting their children. If/when i shoot weddings I will dress semi-formal so that I don't look out of place.
