Here are a couple shots I got. THis is my first time ever trying to shot the moon. I've only had my camera for less than a month and since it's been so cold around here, I haven't had a change to get outside and take many pictures. I don't own a tripod so all of mine were handheld. I don't own a long lens either - these were all taken with my 24-105 though I did get my hands on my buddy's 70-200 f/4 so a couple of those shots might sneak in.

I apologize for taking up a lot of space with my pictures. I don't know how to make those nice looking collages that other people are showing.

I like Celestron's of the full eclipse. Better than mine - it was windy and I don't have a remote shutter release (yet). And the fully eclipsed image was very dark. I put three pics up on

well guys... here is my feeble attempt at shooting (part of) the lunar eclipse that happened tonight. i was out for the first hour and a half, but could no longer bear the -20ºF wind chill (and was afraid my camera couldn't either :p)

One of the many that I shot just after a snow squall went through.It cleared up nicely for the latter part of the eclipse.

Nice shots everyone.. I just saw it after I got off of astronomy class. My professor was telling us to go see it.

the professor should have set up a telescope and had the whole class observe the eclipse. These things are pretty cool! Nature can give us the most wonderful images.

Nice shots, everybody!

This was my first time shooting the moon so I just shot a bunch and bracketed the heck out of it. My daughter was very interested and I let her work the IR remote while I changed the settings. It worked out well since she had fun helping and I was able to not have to fumble with the remote, anyway here are my best two of the night.

That picture of Saturn is pretty rocking! I like the others too - amazing detail.

Thanks, it was right there so I thought I'd throw it in there as well. I don't have the ability to stack images yet so it's not as clear as I would like but hey, it works. Thanks again.

This was a wonderful way to get everyone out in the freezing cold to get pictures of something so far away. It was worth the headache I got before bed. I froze for 2 hours and got hardly anything, but so worth it just to stare up and see this wonder of nature. Also, the Saturn shot was something I wanted to get, but my hubby refused to take out the telescope we have (it's big and heavy) because it was just so cold. I told him it wasn't going to happen again for 3 years. But, but then I may just get my act together and know something. :)

Here is my first shot of the evening.. it was SO cold here last night. My camera and tripod had I swear a 1/4 inch of frost when I went in for the night. Did not have a Ziplock bag big enough so I wrapped camera and lens up in a trash bag. Did the trick, the desk was wet this morning but camera was dry and happy :)

I was out in an open field behind a historic home (Robert Frost's farm is just down the road from where I live). It's a great place to shoot the moon because there are no lights. There were 4 other photographers there, one hooked up to a telescope. One of the guys had left his fog lights on his car turned on for a little light (it was dark out there!). A police officer driving by saw the orange glow and thought someone had started a fire so he pulled in with his headlights on. We all turned towards the light with irritated looks on our faces, not realizing it was a police car (it was an SUV). He was really pretty cool when he realized what we were doing and apologized for blinding us with his headlights and asked to look through all our cameras at the moon. My first police encounter over photography! Anyway, here are a few of the shots that I got.

Was going home looking forward to taking some shots when I got robbed right by my house. (I am OK, they got my cell phone from my pocket while they were tackling to the ground, but that's about all they got cuz I managed to escape)

Maybe they are stupid. Try calling the cell phone and set up a place where you can BUY it back for a few hundred dollars because you dont wan to lose the numbers. Then call the cops (or call them first) and tell them to be there.

I couldn't believe seeing the frost buidup on the outside of my lens and especially the lens hood. I had the camera out for only 2 hours and was concerned for it. Imagine tracking Polar Bears in the arctic! I don't think a DSLR would be my first choice in these extreme's.

My first time shooting something like this...didn't get the full moon because it was started when found out about it, didn't stay out until it was finished b/c it was almost midnight here and it was just too cold, wasn't worth it to me. [20d and EF 75-300 (hand held against side of house)]

This has to be one of the most boring things I have shot in a long time, not to mention cold at night here.

I thought I would try something different. These are both full frame. The first is shot with the 1DMKIII, 600 f4 L with the 2.0+1.4TC stacked. The second one is with just the 1.4, big difference. The EXIF will only show the focal length as 1200 as it does not recognize the 1.4 converter in the equation. If my math is right this works out to around 2180mm focal length.

I have to agree. A photographer friend of mine and I got together to do this, and it toooook foreeevverrr. And it seemed like it never really reach totality, even though I know it did, because that right side of the moon stayed pretty well illuminated. It was odd, how it passed through the shadow starting on the lower left, and ending on the lower right.

It wasn't as cold here as it was there, I'm sure, but we were still freezing!

Ya, I know, but I have others where I was shooting 1/125 - 1/500 and they still seems blurry to me.
If you were using a 40D, why didn't you use Liveview to get focus? I find this sort of photography to be about the best justification for Liveview.

Can you read my entire post please? Then I'd like to see you take a 4" shot handheld...I set mine on a beanbag on the roof/hood of my car. I had only an 85mm 1.8 lens with me and no good tripod (using self-timer). The one time I don't have at least a 200mm lens and a 1.4x converter wouldn't you know it... When I got home I shot some pics of the ordinary moon with the 200 and converter because it had given me the bug.

My best settings were ISO 200, 2.5 sec SS, F/11. Any longer SS had a trace of blur and I wanted it to be sharp, erring on the side of sharp towards infinity. (F/8 is probably the sharp spot of this lens.)

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a61/coralnutz/IMG_3627.jpgThis is the first really good excuse I can think of that I might want a timered remote. A series like this would be nicely done and evenly spaced without too much PP for placement.

Ok, so it is the night after and I was to tired and disappointed with the cloud cover that rolled in to sort my pics out.

But heres what I got. And remember kids, the moon rises in the east not from the west. I've already taken flack from some people about the progression, but I also had to remind them that if they seen the moon rise in the west, then they must live on Alpha Centori,(Spelling) or we have a huge problem.

The second pic is what spoiled my viewing pleasure. I so wanted to do the whole thing. Oh well.

Some do this for a living and MANY "save image as..." and try to either pass off as their own or sell the image outright. Now just having the watermark may not stop it. But if someone comes across your image on the internet your name on the image my help with that extra punch some may need.

My progression is as if facing the south :D

But honestly, I think people just do the progression that way because we read left to right, so that's the way they do the progression - not because they think their photo is supposed to represent the cardinal directions.

Dunno about you, but I wasn't facing north when I took my pictures. I was facing almost directly east, and the moon progressed up and to my right as it rose. I had to go downstairs to the porch because it went right out through the top right corner of my east-facing window.

My progression shows the moon going up and right with the passage of time ;)

Is there a reason why one must shoot at small apertures? Obviously not a DOF issue right? Most likely because it is too bright and would result in the shutter speeds being too fast at larger apertures? For some reason the basic sunny-16 rule did not work out for me. I set ISO 200, shutter 1/200, and f/16. It underexposed.

I must say my shots with the 20D on a tripod using a 100-400 turned out real noisy.I was shooting at 5.6-7.1 around 1/6 t0 1/20 of a second and at 200.Some of them were overly bright,but others turned out fairly well,except for the noise.I was shooting in manual mode.I probably should have changed the aperture more,but had trouble ,because I couldn't feel my fingers anymore.
Any thoughts on the noise?

I had similar experience. I shot at f/5.6, ISO 200, and 1/250 for the bright moon (manual mode). I tried sunny-16 rule but that didn't work. For the totality shot, I had to bump the ISO to 800 and shot at 1/4s (same f/5.6). I didn't use a tripod, so that limited me somewhat.

I used a tripod, with 5D and 400mm 5/6 + 1.4tc, iso 100, f/8, f/11, and f/16, with manual focus. The ones with the AV at f/16 were the sharpest, with a SS at or around 1/100 of a second. I think that's what I had it at, for the shot I posted...and this, after reading a linked document/blog about how to shoot the eclipse. I figured I'd try a bunch of combos...just to see what happened...but then again, it was about 50 degrees out...once the clouds broke.

There is a HUGE variance in the amount of light.

My fastest shots were ISO 400, 1/500", f/11 (almost full moon)
My slowest (non-blurry) shots were ISO 800, 0.4", f/4

That's a light difference of 3200x!!!

Then I was doing 1/5 second exposures at ISO 400 f/4 for the "red" portion.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been away for a few days.

I shot this with my 5D with a 70-200 (& 2xTC, so therefore 400mm) on a tripod at f/5.6, 1/80sec 1600 ISO. For extreme telephoto shots I also like to use an external shutter release and mirror lock up.

Thanks for the comment. I should have tried a couple with a different ISO, but I was already at 1/2 second shutter speed. I have a decent tripod/ball head but wasn't sure how steady it would have been at longer exposures. I should have tried though, I will have to remember for next time to at least try.

FWIW, I have a $10 Wal-Mart tripod and I get perfect 30-second exposures out of it.

Just use the self-timer or a wireless remote to activate the shutter. You obviously don't want to touch the camera at all while the shutter is open.

The moon moves WAY too much for 30 second exposures... even at 1/2 second, you'll get motion blur, unfortunately!

It's pretty wild watching the moon move off the LCD screen on a 40D in liveview mode!

jonnythan

I wasn't talking about 30-second exposures of the moon! Even in full eclipse, 1/2 second exposures were more than enough for me at ISO 200!

I just meant the tripod has produced great results with actual 30-second exposures :)

You have to take into account the lens that was used when talking about exposure / shutter speed (and even camera based on sensor size). I used a 300mm with 1.4 TCON to give me 420mm on a Rebel XT. All the full eclipse pictures I took looked best with 1/2 second exposure at ISO 1600. If I lowered the ISO, I would have had to extend the shutter speed. I am sure I could have used 800 instead and wish I would have tried, maybe even 400 but I think the shutter speed would have been too slow. 1/2 second shutter at ISO 200 would not have given me the proper exposure with the setup I was using.

jonnythan
27th of February 2008 (Wed), 12:12
1/2 s at ISO 1600 = 1 s at ISO 800 = 2 s at ISO 400

2 seconds doesn't seem unreasonable to me with a tripod.

All I was saying that you had plenty of room to lower the ISO 1 or 2 stops and decrease shutter speed accordingly to get some pics with less noise.

I was giving djeuch an example of the exposure settings I used to compare to 30-second exposures, not suggesting that you could have used the same settings!

TenaCJed
27th of February 2008 (Wed), 12:20
I know the 30 second was just an example. I was just pointing out that you stated you used 1/2 second at ISO 200 with no problems, that would not have worked out for me. We are both on the same path, so no worries. I agree that I could have used ISO 800, maybe even 400.

The only thing that would worry me with 2 seconds is movement of the moon. I know that 2 seconds will give movement on stars, not sure on the moon though as I have never had that long of an exposure with the moon.

Hopefully next time I will remember to give 400 and 800 a try. Even better and I will have a camera that has less noise at 800 and 1600 then the DRebel XT!

What's still incredibly interesting is the dynamic range required... I didn't catch a full moon shot, but my brightest shot (just at the start of the eclipse) and dimmest (full eclipse) exposure stats are here:

Exposure Time 1/512
F Number 8.0
ISO 400

Exposure Time 0.8
F Number 4.0
ISO 800

To calculate the difference, it adds up as follows:

(ISO 4-- to 800) 2 x (f/4 to f/8) 4 x (0.8 / (1/512) )

2 x 4 x 409.6 = 3,276.8 times light exposure difference between shots!

Holy cow, I learned something new that is so different that I could have imagined I'm mind boggled. Since the eclipse I've been wanting to try my hand at shooting the moon again. It's been cloudy off and on so I haven't been able to find the moon. I'd presumed that the moon would vary it's rise and set times by a few minutes each day like the sun and that I should find it in the sky a little later each day. Not so. The moonrise time is over an hour later each day than the day before and some days it doesn't rise at all. I was out looking for it last night. When I looked at a moonrise/set calendar today I discovered all this and that in fact it didn't come out at all in my area yesterday. Here's a link that you can redefine for your area. http://sunrisesunset.com/

100 x 2 (f/11 to f/8 ) x 1 2/3 (f/8 to f/6.3 ) x 4 = 1,333x :D

x8, not x4!

100 x 2 (f/11 to f/8 ) x 1 2/3 (f/8 to f/6.3 ) x 8 (ISO 1600 to ISO 100) = 2667x ;)

You sure?

100-->200
200-->400
400-->800
800-->1600

That's 4x, right?

Geez, even I did it wrong.

You're halving the amount of light four times. That's not 4x, it's 2^4, or it's 2x2x2x2, or 16x.

Dropping one stop yields half the amount of light. Dropping two stops yields 1/4 the amount of light. Dropping three stops yields 1/8 the amount of light, etc.

100-->200 = 1/2
200-->400 = 1/2
400-->800 = 1/2
800-->1600 = 1/2

Half of a half of a half of a half is 1/16!

100 x 2 (f/11 to f/8 ) x 1 2/3 (f/8 to f/6.3 ) x 16 (ISO 1600 to ISO 100) = 5333x
