I like to shoot at 1/160 and f/11 at ISO 100. Using a remote release and mirror-lock up has really improved my shots, too. Before, without the remote release, I noticed some CA around the edges... now, that's all gone and shots are always sharp. Have fun tonight guys... total eclipse is at 10:01 p.m. EST!

I'ma go back in about ten minutes to catch the total eclipse. It was really cloudy earlier which produced some halos around the moon, but nothing a bit of CS3 couldn't fix. I've been bracketing everything. I'll post 'em when I'm finished with all of my shots, don't want to miss anything.
Things look to be clearing up, will report back soon.

Was going home looking forward to taking some shots when I got robbed right by my house. (I am OK, they got my cell phone from my pocket while they were tackling to the ground, but that's about all they got cuz I managed to escape)
That kinda put a damper on my evening...however I decided to go to the backyard and shoot pics of the eclipse for some much needed distraction.

The only shot that came out with the 40D, 1.4x, 70-200 f4. Trees everywhere and focus was impossible AF, so I had to switch to MF. But it's about as good as it gets when the tripod won't stay still while I'm shaking. Love the pictures posted. Everyone did a great job.

I just came in with camera & lens in plastic bags. It's 27 degrees outside and I've been out there for 2 hours. :) All in the name of posting the pictures. What is wrong with me?
27 degrees??? I'd be in shorts and a tee shirt. I went out for an hour total and its minus 12...WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME???? I've been in for about 1/2 hour and I still have the chills. Here are a couple of my shots...not too pleased but....

Posted in another thread, but here's my attempts. Last is an animated GIF.
Shooting with a 40D, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and a Canon 1.4xTC.
Conclusion? Not enough reach. I have to do all 100% crops. Need a 2x AND 500mm or more... I almost rented them just for this occasion!
Here's my "best" shots out of my own bunch. URL preceeding the image is to the CR2 RAW file if anyone wants to play with them:
100% crops:
http://www.jeuch.com/pics/2008/2008-02-20/IMG_5429.CR2

http://www.jeuch.com/pics/2008/2008-02-20/nomark/IMG_5435.JPG
100% crop, noise reduction (unfortunately gets a little soft):
http://www.jeuch.com/pics/2008/2008-02-20/IMG_5436.CR2
http://www.jeuch.com/pics/2008/2008-02-20/nomark/IMG_5436_pp.JPG
Sized down to 200x200 from 100% crop (475x475) makes it look much better:
http://www.jeuch.com/pics/2008/2008-02-20/nomark/IMG_5429S.JPG
Resized and converted to animated GIF. I like how it turned out in the end!
Each shot is approximately 10 minutes apart.
http://www.jeuch.com/pics/2008/2008-02-20/mooncrop/nomark/moon.gif
And the obligatory combo shot:

Sorry for quality.. using an 18-50mm 'cause I don't own a telephoto. Ironic, because I work at an astronomy shop and had to stay late to host a big eclipse party the store held.
Despite awful clouds, horrendous light pollution from parking lot lights, and cold wind.. someone gave me a free tripod (cheap quality, but better than none!) and let me borrow a.. 35-200mm? It wasn't sharp at all so I kept to my Sigma.
