Wasnt sure how to go about shooting this at all, does it work even with out the porgressive redness?

Yup this is the way I did it too - if you go for the progressive redness you'll get mad blown out areas.

the clouds cleared up right before the partial, and came back after the total eclipse.. i was very lucky, i thought i was going to miss it completely!
