It's funny to see your equipment list... I did just about everything you have marked as far as upgrades, from a 'regular' zoom to the 100-400, from the rebel to the 20D and from the 18-55 to the TAMRON 28-75. It's repeated to the point of exhaustion around here, but I really don't think there's a better value out there quality and feature-wise than the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. For under $400 you'll be shooting 'L' quality images all day long, and I loved the lens on the Rebel. If you don't have the battery grip and plan on keeping the Rebel, go grab one, it really balances out the camera with the meatier lenses.

Good luck!

Would you consider the Tamron to be one of the "meatier" lenses? Would I need the grip for using that lens on a 20D? Or only for the longer zoom lenses (70-200mm etc.)?

Well not meaty compared to my 100-400, but meaty compared to the plasticy 18-55!

The 28-75 is a sweet lens. I dont' know what I'd do without mine. Well, yes I do...I would have spent ALOT more money on the the Canon

Anyway, do a search...there are tons of photos and reviews on here about this lens. Here; most of this wedding I shot with the 28-75. The reception shots were primarily the 50 and the shots in the stone arches were the 70-200....just about everything else was the 28-75.

thanks to everyones advice here I plumped for the Tamron 28-75.
I will be quite interested to see how this compares to my 17-40L.

Out of curiosity, I asked the local camera shop how much I'd get if I part ex'd my 10d against a 1dmkII... £300 to £400!! Think I'll be hanging on to it for a while yet!

After reading numerous posts about it, I finally broke down and order one for myself this morning from B&H photo. I should have it in time to do a car show saturday and a model shoot sunday. I am really looking forward to it.

Get to know it before you do a paid shoot. It does have some minor issues, but overall I love the lens and it is by far my most-used lens. I do have to adjust the colors a little bit differently with this lens, but I just have a preset in my PSCS Raw for photos shot with this lens that makes a VERY slight adjustment with the green hue. Have fun with it!

My 28-75 should arrive this Thursday from BH Photo.

what issues did you have with it? Just the color?

Yeah, sometimes I think the color is a little too green, but then there are other times that I think its fine. Once in awhile it will also seem just a little slow to focus, but still not bad....most other times its pretty fast.

Its also pretty tough...as I posted previously, I recently dropped it from about 5 ft. and it seems fine. I haven't noticed any problems with it.
