can anyone recommend a really good point and shoot canon camera. My niece wants one , i have let her have a go with my 400d but it would be a waste of money to buy her a dslr as she would not use all the features and its to much money for her. a good zoom range and is would be useful

Do you want manual controls? is size important? (question and a half indeed!) Any other battery requirements or anything?

well depending on age as well. any of the g series may b a lil bit too complex for her. u may want to try a point n shoot. any of the sd series is nice cuz of its size imo.

I wouldn't say a G series cam is too complicated for anyone, it's got all the auto settings that any of the other P&S have, it's just that they've got the major advantage of also giving manual control if you want it. And that's obviously a major benefit for anyone wanting to actually learn photography.

If she wants to learn how to shoot manual then get her a G-series, if she wants to point and shoot post this in the small compacts forum and they will probably be more help.

Depends on her level of interest, use and responsibility. If the camera's going to be kicked around, neglected, lost, dropped, or whatever, buy cheap. If she is willing to take care of the camera and want to learn more about photography listen to the recommendations you've gotten so far.
