I read a lot of the initial posts about v5 and they were none too positive. I know they've released at least one update since then, but I'm leary of spending yet more money on the product if it's still buggy and slow.

I love the 4.5 version of DxO and would keep using it if I weren't upgrading to a 40D. I know I can download a test version of the v5, and I may end up doing that depending on feedback, but I'd like to hear users opinions first.

So...anyone using v5 and have a positive review? negative?

I upgraded from 4.5 to 5.0.0 when it first came out and I was one of the lucky ones who never had any crashes. But 5.0.0 was horribly slow in starting and a number of options just did not work. The Lightroom / Optics Pro interface worked just fine for me (I call Optics Pro from LR only when I need it) but I saw plenty of post from others saying that it did not work for them.

I recently upgraded to 5.0.3 but it took 3 installs (at an hour a piece) and a number of emails to DxO Support to get it. This version loads a lot faster and I estimate that the load time is very close to what it was under 4.5. All the options that did not work for me now do, so that is good. Processing time is still very slow just as it was in 4.5, which is why I only use it occasionally.

There is another new version (5.0.4) but I have not tried it yet. Overall I like the new interface but I still find it cumbersome to use. Until some other company comes up with as good of a geometry control as Optics Pro's is I'll keep using it.

That sounds promising but are there no more users of DxO? No other opinions?

5.0.x have been a nightmare so far. I had problems on various PC's and i doubt that i will ever use any version above 4.5 to be honest. Until they get rid of the ridiculous copy protection bloatware and release a STABLE version it's a big no for me.

Look at their forums if you want to know more but most people have had major problem with the latest version.

4.5 is good if it wasn't for the lousy interface. I only use it on rare occasions with single images. To do a large shoot in DXO will take forever and it's not worth the trouble.

I use DxO ver 5. Dreadfully slow, and in my opinion FWIW absolutely the best RAW converter. Others will certainly disagree and your milage may vary.

I give version 5.xx mixed reviews. They have "cleaned up v5" to some extent.

I have version 5.0.4, and have used the two prior releases: 5.0.0 and 5.0.3. All versions are very slow to start, and there is no visible indication that the program has actually started for 15-30 seconds. It does not get around to presenting a "splash screen" until then. However, if I exit and restart the program, the startup process is much faster, probably because most of the program components are still cached in memory.

With 5.0.0 I found that the program did not use both of my dual-core processors and, therefore, was much slower than 4.5.

With 5.0.3, this problem was fixed, but I found the program unstable when I tried processing more than about 400 pictures in a single run.

I haven't tried this many pictures in 5.0.4, so I cannot comment.

If I had a 40D I would probably be disappointed with their limited set of lens modules.

I normally use the program with default settings only, for initial post-processing. I use another program for additional post-processing when necessary.

I find the de-noising to be very good. I can barely see the noise in ISO3200 pictures from my 30D, even when pixel-peeping.

My system is a Win/XP Core-2-Duo, 2.4ghz, with 2gb RAM.

No, in a word. I'm sticking with 4.51 until they make significant improvements not least of which is 64bit support. There is a pathetic security tool they decided to use with v5 named InterLok which apparently does not support 64bit operating systems.

I run a dual XEON with 4GB RAM, 64 bit XP and 10k SAS drives. The new version doesn't support 64 bit even though 4.51 does. The use of 64bit allows the OS to recognize more RAM. DXO, and PS3/LR for that matter, run significantly more fast with higher amounts of RAM.

I find v4.51 to handle huge number of RAW images (I use a 5D) quite well and the work flow is great for my purposes.

You should read the DXO user forums and contact some the posters directly.

Wow. There are some really unhappy users over at the DxO forums. Kinda like the Microsoft forums following a new release. Although really, it's unfair of DxO to pull the MS trick of releasing a beta product as GA - I think MS has that trademarked or patented or something.

So I guess the answer is that when it works, it works well - but not as well as the earlier version, which is too bad as it did a great job and I doubt 4.5.1 will ever be updated to support the 40D.
