View Full Version : You know what would be a really cool camera feature?

Now we all know that spray and pray is not the answer, but there are times when it might be the way to get a shot.
I was thinking, for 1D bodies where you have a crazy high FPS, how awesome would it be to have a feature where you could see all the images taken from a single burst, select the ones you want to KEEP, and have the camera automatically delete the rest of the burst? Saves you CF space, time in post sorting through shots, and wouldn't seem too hard to implement.
So let's say you're shooting baseball. The pitcher lines up his pitch, and you start a burst on the batter, all the way until he's done hitting. You look through that burst, pick the shot where he is just connecting with the ball, and the rest go poof!
How cool would that be?

Would this be quicker than just deleting the ones you don't want, like we do now?

Yes for sure, because there are a lot more shots that you would want to toss in a burst. The key is, if you can select the shots from each burst that you want to keep, in camera, then the camera would just have to delete the non-selected ones.
The closest thing to this right now is protecting selected photos and then doing an erase all, but this would let you do it PER BURST, and would be much faster! If you do say, a 45 frame burst, going through and deleting each and every junk shot out of the 45 would take ages.
Just some late night fantasizing here, haha.

Only to find later when your reviewed the files in your computer that you wish you had kept one or two of those deleted images to complete the sequence?

How about a terrabyte CF card? Then you just spray and go through the 50,000 images (RAW, of course) you took in the comfort of your home.* At 10fps, 50,000 images is 83 minutes of non-stop spraying! (we'll just ignore burst rate limitations on RAW files) I'm sure you'll get a better shot than those guys who only take 200-300 images every game. Nevermind getting your images in to the editor first, or at least on time, for publication.
*1TB / 20-Mb photos = 50,000+ photos. Adjust this up and down as specific rates come to mind. ;)

That would be awesome, but if we shoot like that everyday or week.. we'll have to replace the shutter within a year.

The cameras already have this feature. You've got the ability to put a lock on certain images in camera. When you delete the CF card in camera, the locked images are retained. So, all you need to do is review your burst, press the "lock" button on the ones you want to keep, then "delete all". This will retain your smaller subset of images.
It's dead quick too.

The procedure is actually pretty fast on the camera.

The feature is quick, but the photographer is slow. Can you FOR CERTAIN pick one of a dozen burst images on your 2.5" screen before the next batter comes to the plate? Throw in a few pitches, a couple of foul balls, and you're looking at several dozen photos on one batter. "Hmmm, lock this one, lock that one... damn, next batter is up, lock this photo... no don't pitch to him yet!.... keep that one... delete all the others... Oh hurry up camera!... WHAT! He hit a home run on the first pitch?...."

That was the first thing that popped into my head as well. :)
