Okay, so I find a good deal on a used 1D on eBay, dede to get it rather than a 20D with grip. I mean, I don't need 8 megapixels. The camera only comes with one battery, so I order a spare, which just gets here before the camera.

The battery is huge! I think I could jump-start a Volkswagon with it. I'm not sure 1000 or so couldn't keep Rhode Island lit during a blackout. Most CAMERAS weigh less. Heck, most college physics books probably weigh less than the camera based upon this battery.

Is this really a CAMERA battery? How big is the camera going to be? Am I going to need a wheelbarrow to tote the 1D around when I attach my 100-400 IS? Will people stare everywhere I go? "Hey, Martha,dumba-- toting around taht boatanchor, and why does it have a camera lens attached to it?"

I think the camera is slightly smaller than the battery.

It is like the Tardis--bigger on the inside than on the outside!!

Is it really smaller than the battery? Then the two together should weigh less than the battery by itself. What a relief. :D

I think he meant if you were to stand it on end the camera is slightly shorter.

Based on that, and the fact that the battery accounts for pretty much the entire length of the camea you should get an idea of the dementions.

It's nearly a square.

It is large yes, but really not that much larger then a 10D with a grip. With anything, it's something you'll get use to and i'm sure you'll love.

I simply love my 1D and actually like the size, i feel liek i can mount just about any lens on there and still be able to hold it all (i'm refering to lenses UNLIKE the 300 f/2.8 and up)

You will like it. If not, my Mark II is lonely and will take it in for companionship. It is a lot heavier than you will be used to. The need for a mono-pod will be more for relieving your shoulders than for stability.

Welcome to the world of 1.

The Camera is freaking HUGE!

It's a BEAST... other Cameras run and hide in Fear when a 1D is sighted... :P

When you open the box for the first time.. have a freind stand by with a camera to catch the look of shock and horro on your face!

Your expression will match those of the japanese in a "B movie" horror film as tokyo is once again crushed under the feat of Godzilla...
