I have just been contacted by Parks in the UK and informed that my 1D MkII body is ready... Huzzar!

I'm going to go all out, (b warned guys) but the prices of the L lenses here! ouch! They are double the prices of B&H in NY! (I'm prepared to take the hit on the warranties)

By buying from BandH I save at least £1300 (2500USD) on the price (not allowing for any import duty... ehem!)

So my question to you guys is a simple one but one which I need urgent guidence on as Cathy at Parks is holding the body. (please forgive me if the question has been asked before, but I haven't the time to search)

At any rate my point is this, what pray, is the advantage of buying USA products over imported USA products as there is on average a $30 difference in price.

Thanks for any help in advance!

If i understand right, since your overseas if you buy the USA version you wont get the warranty. If i (live in US) buy the imported version, i dont get the warranty. So i dont think you'll get a warranty either way, aside from that i dont think there is any difference. I have been told that buttons may be differnt on some models, but i dont think i've ever seen that apply to anything in the photography industry yet.

My flash is the imported version it works fine.

As for buying un-warranted stuff, just get insurence, it's cheap and covers more stuff...like dropping your camera in the sea

(i really need to get my stuff insured!)

Cameras bought in the USA only have a USA warranty - period.

Lenses are covered by a world-wide warranty.

Why don't you shop in the EU zone?

No import duty etc.

for instance at ac-photo.com.
They are in Germany (only 16,5 % Vat).

I bought equipment there recently and saved
tons compared to the Irish prices.

Q. Lenses have a world wide warranty? Why am I spending an extra $2500 here in the UK then? B..... Hell! These price differences make me so mad!

As for the other link - ac-photo.com, there are no links to equipment that I can see

A quick search for photo retailers in Germany reveals:

http://www.ac-foto.com/ac/shop/shop.php?new_sprache=eng

for all my English speaking cousins out there.

Thanks DeeplyDigital.

I will check the site out.

Still interested in the WWW (World Wide Warranty) on lenses. Please confirm...

Lenses bought in the US have worldwide warranty, I have a 70-200 F4L that I imported from b and h. Even paying vat and import duty it worked out 25% cheaper than the UK.

And I have confirmed that the warranty is definitly worldwide

In which case,

even going for the wish list at B and H I save myself over £1000 (before duty) on UK prices.

BTW... I put a 70-200L IS lense into the equasion... My wife likes the colour!

I've just ordered a 70-200 L IS 2.8 from Jessops, is £1300 and they've got 12 months interest free credit going at the moment!

ArtierSquare,

A Worcester man ? Good on you. :)

Anyway, for photog stuff in our neck of the woods, try the London Camera Exchange in Worcester. Much more knowledgable than the Jessops lot. Go in and talk to Andy, he will sort you out.

Cheers

Ian (1/2 way between Worcester and Malvern)

Am lucky enough to be visiting N.Y. in December.

Already have a shopping list...
70-200 f4 L
50 f1.8
1.4 teleconverter
2 or 3 flash cards

and it keeps growing

Reckon what I save will pay for at least half the cost of the trip.

Stooge_UK,

I shall be in the Village of NY in December too. Maybe see you there.

iwatkins,

Thanks for the info on the London Camera Exchange... is there a group of guys who meet up in the Worcester area. I shall soon be needing some expert guidence on how to use all this Canon gear!

I hate to rain on your parade, but BandH is doing the IS for £914.63 at the current exchange rates, plus p and p etc... but thanks for the info

so far, all my gear came from B&H, and i was lucky enough to skip import duty/tax on my first 5 orders!!! First order saved me nearly £2k!!!

KennyG was absolutely right, body isn't honoured by the warranty but lenses are.
