I use a cheap optical slave attached to the flash unit's PC socket with a short male-male PC cord.
You can get them here:

You'll probably want to put some kind of flag or snoot on the flash to prevent lens flare. Here's a thread about how I did it.

I used to use white paper for a snoot, but I think I'm switching to aluminum foil because it's easy to shape.

Hmmm. Seems like your question is rather ambiguous. Care to elaborate? :)

Optical slave or radio trigger
You could make a snoot from a cereal box, or foam board and a grid from corrugated cardboard or black straws.

Yeah...I was asking about shaping the beam....not about how to set the flash off. Sounds like I can make something good enough to experiment around with!!.

A little DIY with "Fun Foam" and velcro will get you the same thing for less than $2.

I have an 8" snoot I made out of a Captain Crunch box and duct tape.

OK, I am going to make me a snoot to test with, being into RC airplanes I have some white foam to mess with. One more question, where is the hair light suppose to be located in relation to the model?
And I am guessing the 580 needs to be in manual and you just have to play with the power?
