i can go through the file viewer utility and download pictures via that... but i can't get the CF card to show up on the desktop, which means i can't load the firmware update.
i can't figure out why it wont show up on the desktop, i tried using the normal and the ptp modes. neither make the camera show up on the desktop.
what is going wrong here?

You don't have a card reader? Why not hook up your digital rebel to put the file on the card then switch the card to your D20?

sold the rebel.. apparently you need the card reader with the 20d to actually see the folder on the desktop.

You probably had your rebel set to PTP.. (Picture transfer protocol). Windows XP and a couple of other Win versions have PTP built in.. If your protocol is set to NORMAL, then it is using Canon's proprietary protocol and windows won't recognize it.. You need Canon's software to access the camera..
You should find the [protocol] setting somewhere in your 20D menu.. I'm not sure though.. I don't own one.
I'm pretty sure the firmware upgrade comes with a special loader program that you have to use if you don't have a card reader.. You run the program to transfer the upgrade to the camera..

I have a 20D and the firmware upgrade. It does NOT come with a special transfer program.
I would recommend finding someone with a card reader.
