Are the default prices that they show: ie: 4x6 for .19 cents the "cost" prices from wich you set your mark-up? I am almost ready to pull the trigger on this but I am always reluctant to try new things! Thanks Christian

Yes, the default prices are the true cost.

I have been selling photos on SmugMug for about a year now and they have been wonderful. The prints are of excellent quality and the printing process is very quick.

You only get the mark-up if you have the Pro account. I have the lowest level account, so I turned off print ordering in all my galleries. I don't want somebody profiting off me if I'm not getting part of the money. This is the only thing I dislike about Smugmug. Otherwise it's a great place to host your images.

Valueable info. to have, thank you. I think I am going to get the Pro account. So if you don't have a pro account you don't get any money from the sale of your pics. If that is true what is the point!

I use it strictly as a place to host my photos for others to view without having to maintain my own website, with the attendant hassles of domain names, paying for hosting and periodic updating. If you're not selling prints, like me, then it's a good place to have your photos. What little money I make from photography I make by being a contract photographer and sometimes writer for an aviation publication.

Alot of the pics I was taking family members would buy, and I wouldnt want them to pay $5 for a 4x6 if it only cost SmugMug $.19 to print.

I will upgrading to pro however, so I will be able to charge. I really love smugmug.

I have smug pro. You can set the prices to whatever you want. Portfolio pricing is for all the galleries. Pricing can be set for each individual gallery which will overide portfolio pricing, and Image pricing can be set for any image anywhere which overides all other pricing. Download pricing can also be set for private or commercial use of digital downloads. There is a video tutorial on how to set pricing.

Just a follow-up question.... So on the pro account, you can have different prices for different galleries? So if i had pictures of a family event, i can charge them the "cost" price, and for all other pictures set a different price?

Thanks

It used to be that you could sell prints at cost. Then they modified it so you had to sell at cost + $.01 or else it defaulted to the portfolio price. I don't know if they put the old price structure back.

As of last week the .01 cent was still in the instructions.

As stated above each gallery can have its own pricing.

You can also set an individual image price for any photo in any gallery. An example; I have a few images in galleries with pricing I do not want to sell, so I just created custom "image" pricing at 0.00, select to apply the cost to all products and purchasing options are not available for that image.

Once you set different galleries pricing, when you upload another gallery you can select to have the same pricing as another gallery.

Here's the video tutorial. (http://www.smugmug.com/demos/help/propricing/)
