580 EX VS 580EXII

iS THERE A HUGE DIFFERENCE?
i AM TRYING TO DECIDE BETWEEN THE 2 OF THEM.
I am shooting a 20d at the moment.

The reason I upgraded to the EXII is because of the silent and faster recyling and the power.

Other positive changes but not too important to me:
weather sealing, MUCH better battery door, quick lever lock

Things I didn't like in the change but still not that big of a deal:
Slightly bigger
No dedicated Master/Slave switch

The only reason I upgraded to the ver II was because my 40D allowed me to control the flash via an on-camera menu.

On a 20D I doubt you will notice anything between the two. In all honesty the older twist style flash shoe of the 580EX will fit more snug on your 20D then the 580EX II would.

My new flash fits my 40D more snug then my 30D.
