At one point he was sleeping in his car, out of money.

I know Corey - he comes from a long tradition of climbing photographers (of which I'm one). There's a lot of sacrifice involved. I lived out out of a tent for a while - I didn't have the luxury of a car. Most don't make it very far. Corey is a smart guy, has worked really hard and made a lot of right moves.

While folks might kill to have his present lifestyle, few are willing to do the hard work - over many years - to actually achieve it. The article makes it sound like he got one lucky break and then took off. The reality is that he hustled for many years and no doubt continues to do so.

Great success story. On top of everything else involved with getting images like his is the over everthing notion that if you screw up really badly, you die. No pressure there, eh? Definately worth reading the entire article.

What's that saying -- f/8 and be there?

He's there.

Congrats to the guy, nice work -- Sounds like he's enjoying his life, which is perfect.

Yeah, been there practicing law. Started with nothing, did nothing but work, then high income, high overhead, more stress than you can imagine (try to personally come up with $50k every 2 weeks for payroll alone, that is a lot of hustling and doesn't start to cover the other expenses). In the end, I was happy to get out. With him I see a lot of overhead, a lot of debt, little net worth and monthly payments that would make about everyone here choke. But if he can handle it, more power to him.

When you look below the line, after tax, is when you can be impressed......

Back in the day this AS350 was the "go to hearings" machine for my firm, it saved me a zillion hours of driving a month and was a lot of fun to play with too .... XWIFE ended up with it...... I do miss it, but not the bills that went with it...

I think this is understood by most ambitious photogs - at least I would hope so. Any success takes hard work. Even if you do get a lucky break, you still have to work hard to capitalize on it and to maintain the momentum.

That's probably the answer to every "How do I become a professional photographer" thread ever posted in these forums: work hard.

He probably got a "Lucky" break which opened many doors for him. Getting a lucky break comes from years of preparation and being ready when the opportunity comes. It is very apparent that he did just that, years of work for the success that may look quick and easy to others which can not be equaled by minimal effort.

There's an old saying that goes "Luck is nothing more than preparation meeting opportunity".

Sounds like this guy had the preparation part down pat, whether he knew it or not...
