I have had a problem with canon zoombrowserEX. After a power failure or other illegal shutdown while zoombrowserEX was open, I have not been able to open or create any databases.

Upon opening I receive the messages:
You cannot open more than one database at a time. Close the database before opening a different one.
Please open or create another database using the database dialog which is accesssed via the database
menu command.

When database dialog box is accessed there is no database to restore.

If I try to open the database:
A sharing violation occurred while accessing C:\Program Files\Canon\ZoombrowserEX\Database\My Database.zbd
ZoombrowserEX will now exit. please run zoombrowserEX again and open or create another database.

If I try to create a new database:
Failed to create a database file "C:\Program Files\Canon\ZoombrowserEX\Database\My Database 2.zbd." Please ensure directory and drive are not full or read only.
ZoombrowserEX will now exit. please run zoombrowserEX again and open or create another database.

I have tried this on both my 400 PII W98 and my 700PIII Win ME both have had the same problem after illegal shutdown.

Try uninstalling it, reboot, install and reboot again. Sometimes a fresh start is all it needs.

Hi

this seems to be a common problem. I started using Zoombrowser and was put off by the reports previously posted about exactly this problem.

I now use BreezeBrowser which stores the images in a separate folder rather than a database.

As a previous poster put it "with Zoombrowser it is not a question of 'if' but 'when' the corruption will occur".

Thanks, but tried that without success couple times. Doesn't seem to completely un-install.

I have had exactly this problem. You cannot just uninstall and reinstall. I just doesn't work. Put in your Canon Solutions Disk in your CD drive and go to Zoombrowser. Go to the Troubleshooter part of the manual and you will find on page 102 or thereabouts (sorry, I'm at work so haven't got it to hand) the instructions (re corruption of database) you must follow. Its quite clear (for software instructions!) and more importantly, it worked for me. You will have to "refresh" the data base for the images to be placed back into the directory.

Good luck and keep us posted.

This forum is great - I had this exact same problem and had it solved here.

A few things to help a bit:

My copy of the Solutions Disk did not have a quick link to the ZoomBrowser EX Software User Guide, so I had to do a search on the CD to find it. It's there for me in the Readme\English\ZOOMBROWSER EX GUIDE.PDF.

Open it up with Acrobat Reader (you can get this for free from Adobe if you do not have it), and the answer was in the appendix (page 102 for me). You can follow the directions, but if you are too lazy to do that, here's my version of it:

Look for the name of your database - if you used the default, it should be in the Program Files\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Database folder. Delete four files that are there: xx.dat, xx.idx, xx.zst and xx.zbd. If there are .fcs files, also delete them.

Restart ZoomBrowser again. For me, I got an Open Database dialog box, so I clicked cancel.

From the menu bar, go to Files>Database.

Click new, then at the warning box, click OK.

Enter the new name of your database. You can use "My Database" again if you want (the original default). Click save.

In the next message box, click "Register Image Folder Now"

If you want to register the same folder as the one that was used before the software corrupted itself, then specify the "Image Library One" folder in Program Files\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX. You only need to click on the top level folder, it will reset all of the subfolders itself. If you have a lot of images and folders, it will take some time, but the corrupted database should be restored.

By the way, I really don't like this software anyway, and I have heard there is a different set called BreezeBrowser, which I will be hunting info about on this forum. Anyway, thanks to the forum administrator for setting this up, and thanks for the hints.

I had problems where my zoombrowser crashed as we all know it does.

I got to the point where I had to create a new database, but when I hit cancel, the window just hung. By a streak of luck, i noticed that the app wasn't hung, it was just off the screen in never never land.

If you get to this state, try doing an ALT-F, does it bring up the file menu in the top left corner? If it does exist (but the window is in deep space), you can fix it by closing the app, going to the registry, finding the key for maximized, setting it to TRUE, restarting the app, then restoring the window size.

If you don't know how to muck with the registry, you might not want to try this, which is why i gave such a mediocre how-to. Let me know if this works for anyone else or if you need more help.

Hi Kako,
I never could find Canon Solutions Disk. But the solution you suggested worked like charm. For months, we never downloaded any images thinking it is long tedious procedure to fix the "sharing violation problem".
But the solution fixed it with in 10 minutes.
Thanks and also thanks for the guys who had this forum set up.
Cheers!!
