Hi all;
I just purchased a Canon Powershot A75 digital camera. I come from and old 35mm camera so manual mode is very enoyable. The only problem I'm having is with shutter speeds.

Can I make my own shutter speed or keep the shutter open longer than the presets? I am into night exposures. In some cases I'd like to leave the shutter open for minutes.

Can this be achieved? :cry:

. . . only in an aperture-priority mode . . . and that'll eat batteries, plus give you noise like you wouldn't believe!

Well it looks like I bought the wrong camera then :cry:

Tony i've got the A80 which is almost the same as the A75 as far as manual options. I've found the aperture priority modes and full manual modes to be excellent and have taken many night shots with the shutter open for 10+ seconds (with a tripod of course). Unfortunately the limit is 15 or 16 seconds so you can't leave it open for minutes but l doubt you'd find a camera in the price range that could do better. As far as noise goes, don't use ISO400, try 50 or 100 and this should reduce it to a minimum. Go and give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised!

It's still got the same limitations as virtually every other Canon digital with a 15 sec. max. marked time. The DSLRs permit Bulb exposures which can exceed that, but for reasons of battery life, the longest marked times for consumer-oriented (including Prosumer) is 15 sec. Noise, I can't speak to, but the DiGiC II and new sensors have made some gains over the earlier ones.

Thanks for the replies folks. I like the functionality of the camera. I just wish I had a fully manual ss setting. I have take some decent night exposures already using iso 100, aperture 8.0, Shutter speed 15 seconds.

I was looking to do some star trails at night which requires the shutter to be open for 5 minutes to an hour.

These are my first results of digital photography so be easy on me. :wink:

As you can see I'm a car guy but I thought some of these turned out alright. they'll get better as I learn. I haven't worked with the images yet. They were only resized.

You can get some great night motion shots aswell, using a tripod and usually 10 sec exposure.

if you use manual mode you can generally mess around with it enough to get a decent pic.

here is an example of my first try

Just got A75 for my wife lessthen 2 weeks ago. Then.... SD200 came out
OK, it does not have manual mode (it does, but not for shutter aperture settings)but it has DIGICII processor, just like my 1DMkII... You have to see it to believe (NO NOISE).
I filled u 512MB card and the battery was still good (520 pics).
A75 goes back to Future Shop tomorrow....
I'll post a few during the weekend...
