View Full Version : How can I make this photo "pop?"

I've already done some work on this photo: altering the car in the background from blue to black, bumping the reds and whites in the soldier's uniform and futzing with the contrast in curves. Is there anything else I can do to improve this shot in PP and give it that extra "oomph?"

I think post processing wise, this image already looks very very good.
I'm not totally sure about the crop though.

I'd love to see the greens in the background really rich and bright, to complement the reds.

That's only in my mind's eye, though. Maybe it wouldn't work so well in practice...

How does this look?

It's a bit softer in the skin, cos I used Neat Image and it tends to smoothen/soften small images (it shouldn't do this, Ijust know it does and use it to my advantage sometimes with really small images). With a full size image, the softening effect would not be present...

The rest of the changes were dure to colour balancing, contrast adjustment, hue/saturation adjustment, a colour balance layer to reduce the overly strong reds, some mild USM and that's about it.

For pop, try Unsharp mask with high radius (30-60) and low amount (10-25).

My only criticism is that to my eyes (and monitor) his skin looks a bit reddish...did you adjust the uniform separately or do the reds in the whole image?

I hit it a bit with a bit of contrast adjustment and TaT in Lr, it was pretty good to start with but I think it pops a little more by pulling down the background:

Thanks for the advice and edits, folks! Dave's was closest to what I imagined.

For pop, try Unsharp mask with high radius (30-60) and low amount (10-25).

My only criticism is that to my eyes (and monitor) his skin looks a bit reddish...did you adjust the uniform separately or do the reds in the whole image?

Thanks for the tip. I've got some new shots I'll try that on. As for my shot, I tried tweaking the reds in general with a hue/saturation layer and then masked out his skin. Guess it didn't look as good as I thought. :(
