PocketPCs generally have audio recording capability and use CF, but you'll need to keep hold of the "Record" button. I know some MP3 players have record capability, but I think they all need SD or MMC cards.

Nagra is like Ferrari of Pro Audio recording...

Back in the pre-digital days.. they made a compact reel to reel recorder that was the envy of the world... this was how all the best boot legs were recorded.

I had no idea they were still in the business of making the best tools for Bootleging concerts.

Go find and rent an old hip punk french film called "Diva" ...

You'll learn all about Nagra's and the best Scooters as well. :)

umm... I had the best soviet reel to reel recorder once. It was really neat and HUGE.

But I'll be damned! Look at this:

Does that thing accept compact flash with pics? I may have hurried when I got that Xdrive. :?

I think your only solution is to buy a canon 1D or better yet a 1DMKII. I hear the mic in the MKII is better then in the 1D

Yeah... the thing is... I don't have a house to take out a second mortgage on :D

This is overkill for my application, but reasonable pricing... I guess.

I have a Nex1A+ from Frontier labs.

http://store1.yimg.com/I/frontierstore_1812_288872

It's a very compact MP3 player with radio with very good sound that accepts CF cards as storage medium.
I got it because I wanted an MP3 player with very good sound (better than the Archos GMini  ) that accepts my 1 GB microdrive.
Plus, it is very small.

My take so far?
I was amazed about the sound quality (I listen mostly to classical music).
The sound quality when recording from a tape recorder is also pretty good(haven't tried a microphone yet).
As far as quality is concerned, it's no IPod, but the plastic looks and feels really nice, it's a little translucent. The headphones suck, replace them with the Sony MDR EX-71 and you have a very cool device.

Careful: If you want to record speech, you need the '+' version that has additional 'line in' capability. For some reason I did not find that in the 'Americas' Frontier labs web page, but it's available in their webshop for US$ 89 (price WITHOUT CF card, shipped from Hong Kong, most likely): http://store.yahoo.com/frontierstore/nexiadigaudp1.html

Look at a review for the basic model here:
www.timberwolfdigital.com/Product_reviews/Nex1a/reviewpage1.htm
You'll also be astonished by the worst product photography you ever saw in your life

Best regards,
Andy

Does it have to use a CF card? I know Olympus makes several models of digital voice recorders but I think they use the SD cards or some other type of media.

I went to radioshack today and saw this little panasonic recorder. Holds up to 8 hours and connects directly to computer through usb.

The thing is... instead of getting one piece of equipment which plays music, records music and stores CF cards, I'm getting 3 :?

(I have 2 of them already)
