I'd have to say that my biggest hobby has to be Computers...really anything related to computer hardware and/or gaming. I post a good bit on a gaming message board, and we occasionally start threads like this. Since most of us here use computers to process our photos, I wanted to start one here, too...just for fun.

I'll start things off

Gaming Rig (home built):
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ overclocked to 2100MHz
1GB Corsair Extreme Memory Speed/Low Latency PC3200 (DDR400) RAM
128MB PNY Verto nVidia GeForce 6800 Video card overclocked to 395MHz core / 820MHz RAM
Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy MP3+ Sound Card
LITE-ON 52x32x52 CD-RW drive
120GB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda Hard Disk Drive

Notebook (Dell Inspiron 2650):
Pentium 4-M 1.8GHz
512MB PC2100 (DDR266) RAM
16MB GeForce 2 Go Video card
24x CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
30GB 5400RPM Hitachi Hard Disk Drive
14.1" Display

Half-Life Dedicated Server (home built):
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
512MB PC2100 (DDR266) RAM
32MB GeForce 2 Video card
40GB 7200RPM Maxtor Hard Disk Drive

File/Web/Database Server (home built):
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
512MB PC2100 (DDR266) RAM
64MB nVidia GeForce 4MX 420 Video card
120GB 7200RPM Western Digital Hard Disk Drive

I'm in need of an upgrade...

p3 800, 512m ram, gforce2 pro, 100 gig hdd

The question arises... should I get a new computer or buy 70-200 f/2.8L first? I'm thinking the lens, as the price will stay the same on that.. while with computers, the price is always dropping as new technology comes out.

My comps a complete bastard in the most pure meaning of the word.

AMD Athalon 2600XP
Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 (the early one with the Bios trouble, sometimes it shuts down, sometimes it dosnt).
2x 256mb PC2100 Dual channel ram
No name CD-R
No name 40gig IDE HDD (yes, its way to small).
64mb Nvidia graphics card, its an old one thats been abused, over clocked and cooked a few times. Its prone to locking up just for the hell of it.

All this is wraped inside a case designed for an older 800mhz machine, so its been modified a little.

2x Front USB ports via holes opened up with a hand drill and file.
Firewire port accessed by removing side of case.
80mm Front mount fan
Extra 80mm rear fan with rear screen in case cut out to reduce noise and improve air flow.
2x 40mm fan suspended over graphics card inside case.
New Bios chip fan after the orginal ran a bearing.
In my old flat it was enough to heat the room in the middle of winter.

Sound comes from an old Panasonic double tape deck stereo, cicra 1988.
MS office keybourd (the one with the extra scroll wheel!)
MS optical mouse
Big heavy 17inch glass thing which displays text and images.
Canon plastic thing that whirs and sometimes produces readable text on pieces of papaer.

Looking at your 3 comps FlipsidE I think mine would make an excellent game server!

Forunatly theres lots of room in it for improvements.
I can run 2x serial ATA hard drives, and have an on bourd RAID controller. (I want one times IDE Drive for storing photos etc, and 2x raid drives linked for speed to run games and OS off of.)
It will also take a lot more ram, and a much faster processor, 3200+ at least.

My computer is a Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo 600. These are the specs:

AMD Athlon 1800+ processor (runs at 1533 MHz)
1 GB RAM (was originally 512 MB)
nVidia GeForce 2 video card
Sony DRU-700A dual layer DVD writer (was originally a Philips DVD writer, but that one could only write DVD+RW discs; the Sony writes everything, DVD+/-R(W)).
80 GB Seagate harddisk
80 GB Maxtor harddisk (added this one myself two weeks ago)
Sony Multiscan E400 19 inch CRT monitor

I removed the original 56k modem (I'm not using it) and added an USB 2.0 PCI card.
Peripherals:

160 GB external harddrive with USB 2.0 interface and built-in card reader for different kinds of memory cards
4 x 6 inch Wacom tablet
Epson Stylus Photo 950 printer
ADSL router

I have Windows XP Home and Linux (Mandrake 10.0) installed on my computer.

My home system:
Dell (I can't remember the exact model and I'm not home to check now)

52x CD-R
4x DVD+/-RW
Wacom 4x6 tablet
A crappy Dell printer that came with the computer
Viewsonic P75+ 19" monitor set to 1600x1200

My laptop:
Compaq Presario 2182US
2.3 Ghz Celeron
512 Mb RAM
200 Gb HD space (including that 160 external)
48x CD-R
15" 1024x768 video display

FlipsidE,

That's some nice gear and software you're running. Sigh... to have a HLDS running again... I dumped mine due to bandwidth inconsistancy from my ISP (Cable).

This is the gear I've just moved out of my home office to finish my basement. It took a whole day to empty out the SOHO; don't know if I'm going to put it all back in. It did warm the basement quite nicely in the winter time though ;).

Haven't decided on a GPU yet. Matrox hasn't put out a PCIx version of their Parhelia and I'm spoiled with my Parhelia pushing 3 19" Viewsonic VP191b's at work.

That's about it.

FlipsidE,

- I actually powered off my HLDS server for the first time in a LONG time tonight. It just isn't being used as I wanted it to be used (for my LAN group to play on non-LAN nights). I have hlstats running, and have about 1000 new people playing on my server each month, so it is popular...just not for what I built it for.

I'm going to leave it down for a couple of weeks. If I get no complaints, I'm thinking of stripping it for parts to use in building an image processing machine.

- Absolutely! I bought CS:CZ two to three months ago and instantly got in on the CS:S beta at that time. WOW!! The engine is great and the game is just a blast. IMO, definitely an improvement over the original CS.
