I finally got the G9. I've wanted one for awhile.
One thing I've noticed. Upon powering up the camera, the lens makes a slight grindy clunkish sound. When I hold the camera close to my ear startup does not sound smooth. This is a new camera right out of the box.

Mine does it,, and a friend of mine does it too... it seems odd, but it's normal.

So that's common?
I might go into a camera shop tomorrow and listen to a shelf model.

Really, the sound just seems uncommon for digital technology? However, I assumed it was normal because the lens and zoom are working properly. I just wanted to check, in case I received a faulty G9.
Anyways, I forgot to mention that I'm amped to own a G9!

you might also want to head down to a shop that has a working display model...Just to make sure yours isn't abnormally loudor grindy.

Thanks for reassuring me! Mine makes the same sound and I have been wondering if I should send it back for a warranty check.

Think of it as R2D2 speaking.

I went and checked a floor model. Exact same sound. Must be a unique characteristic of the G9.

Just check if the IS (Image Stabilisation) is set to always on. You can hear it in low noise environment specially after strting the camera.

Mine made the same sound, and when I noted it, I also noted a slight groove on the top of the lens assembly.. so I thought at the time that perhaps a grain of sand got caught somewhere (although I hadn't been close to any sand...) lol.. well thanks to everyone for the reassurance that this is "normal" : )
