View Full Version : G9 box sealed?

I bought my G9 very recently from Amazon UK. I tried two and kept one but both came in boxes which were sealed with a smallish circular transparent sticker on the right side of the lid - no Canon logo on the stickers. I never thought much of it until someone on DPR asked whether G9 boxes were sealed. Thinking about it, I have had a few Canon cameras (D60, 20D, S50, A620 and A640) and not one has been in a sealed box until now - they're always open so shops can stuff them back in without you knowing.
I did a deal with Amazon since I could not manage to get one without banding, a stuck pixel and light leakage on the LCD and did not want to play G9 tennis. My idea was to take on the burden of returning it to Canon for repair for a reduction in price. I might have been too hasty! My suspicion is that it has already been 'repaired' and that this is the best they will offer or it is a returned item sold as brand new.
Has anyone else bought a G9 from Amazon and if so was the box sealed? If it was sealed, what was the state of the camera? Any issues as I describe above?

I bought a G7 16 months ago from Amazon and it did have a small, clear circular sticker over the flap.
I did buy a Ds MkIII from Samy's in LA recently and it did not have a sticker.

Personally, I think you are being a bit paranoid.
My G9 came the same way (like yours) from B+H, FWIW.

I must be missing something... I would be concerned if it came not-sealed and was supposed to be. Sounds like they put a sticker on it, probably for loss prevention...

My G9 came from Amazon UK in November, it had the same circular transparent sticker on the box which IS normal, no problems with mine, never had any issues with any electronic purchases from Amazon UK in the past.

I bought mine from Jessops. It too had a transparent circular unbranded seal on it.
I think it's normal.

I just got mine 1 hour ago and it has exactly the same transparent sticker that others are describing. Think this is normal.

I work for a camera store, and all of the G9's we have are not sealed. In fact, I don't think we have a single Canon camera that comes sealed.

Where else but on a photography forum (and we all know how detail obsessed photogs are) would there be a thread about a circle of adhesive tape on a box?

Buying two of the same model with the intention of returning one is just plain wrong.

Buying two to see if they both have tape on them is weird.

Buying two to see if one of them works fine is rather paranoic, right?
Perhaps too many bad experiences in the past?

So many electronic products come without any seals or wrapping now. I bought a tomtom from bestbuy and it had no kind of plastic on it whatsoever. It made me wonder how the hell they could charge a restocking fee for opened items if the item came opened.

When I bought my G7 it came with the clear sticker. I bought it at Showcase Photo and video store in Atlanta...

I purchased mine from Circuit City. It had a firedog sticker across the entire lid. I would imagine any retail place you go to, not including photo stores, will have the loss prevention sticker on it. Maybe Amazon, since no customers actually browse Amazons isles, put the stickers on them so that they know if the box has been tampered with.

I bought a 20D from Amazon.co.uk a few years ago and when it arrived there were problems with it (shutter didn't release in Av, Tv or M also the dof preview button didn't work). Wasn't sealed and when I tried to return they said they had no 20Ds left in stock. I ended up getting a 30D from another supplier and when it arrived I realised the 20D Amazon had sold me had been used before and was presumably returned as faulty, for instance on the 20D the time and date had already been set, but on the new 30D I had to do this myself, also the packaging was different.
The conclusion here is Amazon have a history of repacking returned products and selling them as new.

I bought a G9 from Amazon and it was opened and used. I had to return it and they sent me another that was sealed.

I tried two because the first was faulty - Amazon UK sent a replacement... It's quite easy really: I want what I paid for not a returned or used or repaired item. That is not paranoia. The law is paranoid? It must be, given CJ's remark, since it demands that brand new must actually be brand new. Companies often pass on such items until someone accepts them. The venerable Jessops has a habit of doing that. I visited a few camera shops recently and not one had a G9 in a sealed box - they all were in unsealed boxes - as was my prior experience of Canon... So, so far, sealed is NOT normal.
While it might seem to be a security measure by Amazon that is not my experience. Previous cameras were NOT sealed. Indeed, it's odd that other separate companies use the very same round sticker... Sounds, thus, more like Canon is sticking it to them. So, why sticker some and not the others? What does Canon do with to all those faulty returned items? I bet the companies don't buy them at full price.
Anyone who thinks it's okay to hoodwink customers with used/repaired as new cameras or whatever will be pleased to know that there are shops who will fleece you good style on both sides of the Atlantic. Go for it!

LOL Greggs do that with meat pies :-)
And I have just checked the box my wife's G9 came in it was sealed with a clear circular sticker along one of the narrow sides of the box.
Mind you I bought it at Park Cameras one of the best Canon Pro dealers in the country, great store, sort out any problems that you may have and let me have many loaners on a "try before you buy (should you decide to do so)" basis.

Bought 2 G9's from Amazon UK, One for me and one for my sister. Both had Stickers. Both Identiaclly packaged and brand spanking new. Beleive me I know 'tampred' goods when I see them. I've had that 'NEW last one on the shelf' one in the past. ;-)
Note: A slight light leak on the LCD is not a FAULY unit. It may be a desight fault but it is not Faulty.

The packaging is probably specified by the retailer to some degree.
and, um, yeah ... it is a little paranoid. Reputable retailers are not trying to "hoodwink" you.

Reputable? LOL!! Paranoid? No - not even a little. Realistic? Yes. You have a naive view of the behaviour of companies. Wise up! Just a few examples. Supermarkets in the UK, which are 'reputable' household names, got together to fix the price of dairy products like milk; the OFT is fining them £millions for it. Tesco, the largest, is standing against this with some nonsense whilst others have owned up and paid up. BTW Dame Shirely Porter who owns Tesco herself some years ago was fined some £20 million for gerrymandering - fixing the make up of a voting district to suit a specific party. She prevaricated for years in the end the Council accepted £7 million. Microsoft has been recently fined 1.5 billion Euros for sharp practices. Microsoft knowingly sold faulty Xbox 360s to gain a market advantage over Sony... I do not think 'reputable' companies like Amazon or Jessops have any scruples about shifting repaired and/or returned items at a new price - hoodwinking. Remember their aim is the maximisation of profit; success is measured by how much they can screw out of customers. The UK, for instance, gets robbed regularly on a grand scale. It pays significantly higher prices than most other places and they are not accounted for by VAT... Do you think maybe UK customers are being hoodwinked...?

Mine was not sealed, however t is not uncommon for a company to go and seal boxes, especially for mail order and for a big company like amazon. I would be very surprised if Amazon was sending out refurbished cameras and selling them as NEW, as it is against the law for one thing, and would seriously damage their reputation. The main thing to look for is that the camera is sealed in its bag, in he box

I would not be surprised. Since when has 'against the law' ever bothered such companies? It is not like a law is enacted and so no one ever breaks it... I've just given some examples of big reputable companies hoodwinking the public on a big scale - what about their reputations? Not enough people get the picture - as is evidenced here - to affect them adversely enough.
Seems to me that a lot of people here have a rosy view of how the Western economies work. No wonder these companies do so well. Try reading the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell for an eye opener - old book but still applies today.

In your first post, it was not clear if you bought two at the same time, and sent one back. If this is what you did, then I believe that was wrong.
But if you bought only one, then sent it back for a replacement, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

My G9 came from B&H Photo NY,NY and didn't have any stickers. The box fold in locking tab didn't appear to have been opened.
B&H may not be the cheapest place to buy but peace of mind, IMHO, is worth a few dollars more!
