Hi, I'm a newbie to this forum and to DSLR photography.

I am flying to see my niece this weekend and she's 6 weeks old (but very small). I was hoping to get a few shots against a black background of her being held in one arm. If you know what I mean by that?

I own a 40D with a EF 50mm lens and the EFS17-85mm lens.

My questions are:

1) What do you use as a background (a sheet?)

2) What type of lighting can I use- I don't have any extra flashes as I tend to like my photos with natural light.

Any other advice is welcome!
Thanks in advance and I hope ive posted in the correct section

I've seen the shot you're trying to achieve and I've attempted it myself. I think the key to the shot you're describing IS the lighting. Without the help of some strobes, I think it will be tough to get good results. With two new grandchildren, the lens I use the most is the 50 1.4. Keep the 50mm lens on and be ready to take candids when the good moments arrive. Kids that age are tough to photograph.
