I got my firewire card reader last night, and boy does that thing make a difference. Worth every penny not to sit in front of the computer waiting for 20 minutes while 1GB of raw comes down over old USB.. The only problem I'm having is that if I plug my IPod into my sync-cradle, the card reader just won't work anymore. I have to reboot with the ipod out of the cradle and then it will see the card reader once again. I know the ipod is charging over the firewire connection, so it's probably a power draw issue but has anyone had any similar experiences? Should I get a bigger power supply? I have a belkin firewire card I got a best buy, so it's not just any knock off firewire card. The card reader is made by microtech and I got it from B&H, it didn't come with any XP drivers..

sorry this may be too OT ... but i've noticed a HUGE difference in speed between USB cardreaders.
my old USB1.1 reader would take about 10 seconds per RAW img. the USB2.0 reader that is built into my new computer case (Antec Aria) will do about 2 imgs/sec. this is with the same SanDisk 512MB CF card.
may be worth looking into if the IPOD problem becomes unsolvable.

I have had issues with the IPod firewire driver. On one system where I had the IPod firewire driver loaded it prevented my computer from communicating with my camera over the firewire connection. System said the camera was there but when tried to access the camera it complained about a communicaiton error. Problem cleared up after I removed the IPod driver.

I have the Delkin (not Belkin) firewire card reader and it seems to always give me problems with my other firewire devices (HDs mainly) whenever I plug it in. It's so bad that I have to keep it unplugged until I need it and then I have to turn the other firewire devices off just so my PC doesn't get messed up. So maybe your problem is in the card reader, too. Or, maybe not.

How did you remove this driver? I thought it was built in with itunes? Or is this the ipod service you disabled?

I had the same problem with my ipod using firewire. Try going to the microsoft.com and downloading the firewire update. Works fine now.

Thanks.. I'm actually rebuilding the PC now (got a new 120GB HD to use as main partition) so if XP w/ SP2 doesn't have the firewire update I'll give that a shot. I appreciate the input!

hmm.. well after the rebuild, nothing worked that I connected to the firewire card.. so I bought a new one, and magically everything is ok now. Not bad, $25 at CDW, INTEK21 1394 3 port pci adapter if anyone is interested.

It is a long sad story but started with me just trying to remove ITunes and the IPod driver and ended with me reloading windows :x
But once I had ITunes/IPod out of the way no problem with the firewire. :P
And that was after I talked to Canon "Tech Support" (is that an oxymoron??). Canon never asked if I had other firewire devices installed. Just said that I must be that my firewire connection on my laptop was incompatable with Canon camera. So glad I only ocasionally beleive tech support.
