View Full Version : POTN G-series Speed Challenge #160 - Subject: Multiples and repeats.

25th of February 2008 (Mon), 17:45
CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED!
Thank you everyone, I spent endless hours staring at your photos, I had no idea that it would be this challenging. Everyone did it, everyone satisfied the request and I love where all of your vision took you, a totally new experience for me. Thank you!
The Winners!
Third Place: PING by drpino, I love the color but mostly I'm attracted by the way the image seems to move into frame wandering like boats on a river from the top left, cross the frame and then turns back to leave out the lower left. I looked a this over and over for about three days before it dawned upon me what it was, and I used to play with PING's!
Second Place: Throne of Ancient Chinese Emperor, by jesseli- simply a beautiful photograph but what I really love is the way you let the light bloom through the windows, giving it even more of the third dimension, depth, within a two dimensional format. Overall just beautiful.
First Place: The House of Endlessly Repeated Days by teekay-this photo just made me stare, it was the hard repetition of lines and forms, both ends of the contrast spectrum demanding attention, the image seeming to recede back to the beginning by going from right to left, the slight tilt back in the same direction, and there amongst all of this planning and attention to order, is the random patterning of peeling paint, of neglect. So many stories could be invented from this one photograph, intensely powerful!
Challenge #160 - Subject: Multiples and Repeats, anything that is a line up of anything or pattern of repeats, multiples whether in camera or in post production, you can really stretch on this one, challenge all of our thinking and have fun.

Thanks, Jannie! First place was an unexpected honour indeed this time, given the quality and diversity of entries.
BTW, I wasn't an inmate or even a visitor at the grim "Big House" where my shot was taken. The place is now a museum I came across by chance at an overnight stop, and one day I'd like to go back and spend a whole day of photography there. If anywhere could be said to have vibes, that's it.
New challenge will be posted as soon as I get inspiration for a subject...

Congratulations to Teekay and drpino and everyone who enter the challenge. I learned a lot from you. Thanks for considering me as the 2nd. It is really a surprise to me.
The throne is located in a hall in the highest imperial learning school of ancient China where the emperor delivered lectures. The hall is surrounded by water and it was a bright sunny day when I took the shot, so I could get sun light almost from every angle.
It was my first post and I appologize for any troubles caused by me-I had some internet problems that my picture could only be seen by some of the viewers but not all. Marie helped me to make my picture available to all the viewer. Thank you, Marie.

congratulations to Teekay and Jesse!
being as my entry was my first post here (after a couple months of lurking), i was pleasantly surprised to receive third place. thanks to all for the kind words and warm welcome.
my photo is of new PING iron heads being made at the Dolphin foundry (owned by PING) in Phoenix, AZ. the melted stainless steel had just been poured into the ceramic molds which themselves had just been pulled out of the oven.
i just got my G9 over the past holidays and haven't had much time to put it to use. this contest and forum give me even more motivation to find time to take more photos.

congrats to all, and especially the lovely winners!
i know there has been a lot of debate recently on photo sizes, of which I have largely not followed, but it did seem my image at 800px x 800px was rather large...
anyway, I will go with the rules :)

Congratulations to the winners!
Interesting picture, teekay I can almost fill the past floating on the corridors, bringing grim tales to mind. Perhaps the title helped a bit on that idea. It is always amazing to see what you do with the G1.
jesseli, your picture brings echoes from another culture, amazing shapes, colors, distribution of ornaments and repetitions of different things: windows, vessels, access steps to the throne level and, curiously, the reindeers that we occidentals might expect surrounded by Christmas decoration, are there guarding the solemn throne.
Beautiful picture and colors, drpino. ‘Ping’ was not a clue for me; I spent some time searching traces of the wick or the flame on the small candles I thought they were :) :) .
Jannie hosting and judging is always hard, and posting an interesting theme even harder. You found one that allowed people find many different interpretations. Good job!
Besides the winners, I enjoyed andrewaaa5, Broomer, and Murminator pictures specially.
Great submissions, congratulations to all the participants.
andrewaaa5 yes, the vertical or square images @ 800 pixels are slightly big for 1024x768 screens.
Your picture still works removing the yellow fillies for an 800x600 pixels image. I enjoyed it as posted though, congratulations.

The rules said I could only pick three but the rest of my lists of favorites also included photos from:
rickinto
Murminator
Marie
Mattograph
amoergos
Broomer
andrewaaa5
Maureen Sousa
and the caterpillar that Macroshot had on the first day and then replaced.
But even if you aren't on this list, everyone did an excellent job.

yep, it is just massive. but it still is within the rules (800px at the longest side).
however, what if I chose to post a smaller image @ 600px x 600px ? I guess that would not be allowed... ho hum....
and thanks to Jannie for hosting. Good topic, and some excellent photos.

Actually I think all the judge *has* to do is pick the winner. It has just become the convention to pick a second and third, and sometimes "honourable mentions" as well.
A judge may also sometimes critique all the entries although that is quite a bit of extra work as it can be hard to find something kind to say about the occasional truly awful entry

rpolitsr, thanks for your comments.
The deer was the symbol of imperial power for the emperor, so deer could be found almost anywhere in the Forbidden City-now called the Palace Museum and also the word "deer" in Chinese is pronounced very similar to the word "wage or salary" which does not only mean money but most importly meant to be a government officer (and only in that way you could get paid). So it is a very good animal for both the emperor and normal people.

Hello all. Seems to me I can't find the time to enter these lately although I always peep in to see the subject and then the winners. I love how the last few challenges have brought new participants too! Welcome!
My faves this week along with the winners are: rickinto's- I love simple pictures of plain old objects depicted in different ways. amoergosum's- what a trip! The negative space is great in this one too. And rpolitsr's- great "feeling" from this image, it's simple but I like what it reminds me of. Seems like an ancient thing (slides) but really it wasn't so long ago that we stopped using them (I know some people still do, I just mean in general- the traditional vs. digital age). CJinAustin- I love the creativity and great interpretation of the theme too! I'm also intrigued by the building in marie's shot, is it an apartment building? I'm guessing so because of the title.

This is such a neat way to get people to share their photos, I'm not a very competitive person so mostly it is just the fun of getting to figure something out and trying to make it work or to start noticing how much the sun is shining today and maybe I should go get a different sunny and warm photo.
And I was so concerned that no one would like my challenge and wouldn't post any photos at all, okay I'm very new at this sort of thing, quit laughing, I was thrilled with the participation and the level of quality, very neat.

The deer was the symbol of imperial power for the emperor, so deer could be found almost anywhere in the Forbidden City...
You provided a very interesting description of the role of deer in the Chinese millenary culture, thank you. We have a lot to learn from eastern cultures. I hope to dig a bit more in the internet about the Emperors and Chinese art and symbols soon.

Thank you sara for the comment. ‘Ancient thing’, that said my sons, they were not talking about the slides, though, they referred to the third slide in my picture where you can see me learning electronics in Italy almost forty years ago. The slide was shot by a friend with my first camera, a Canon FT QL.

Great Challenge and congrats to the winners.
Again, these challenges make me think of different ways to take photos. I took mine early Sunday morning, while waiting for my laundry to dry. I noticed that all the doors of the washers were open and that they all were the exact same, so I got my camera out, and just played with the angle a bit. I thought that it would be cool if I could have made the row look like it was going on to infinity, but alas, someone came in and started loading clothes into the washers, so I settled for the shot I got.
Thanks again, Jannie, for this great challenge.
Kevan_G9

Let me jump on the bandwagon too, you guys...
These challenges are a terrific way to push oneself towards getting to really know the camera, how to improve photo composition and post production.
The picture of the factory face (Factory Pains) I included here was a bit of an odd duck. The photo was taken at an angle and at the widest setting had everything going on in terms of irregular lines, I had bowing and slanting, from every direction. Perhaps the photo shouldn’t have been submitted in the first place, but with a limited catalog of photos to select from so far, I tried my best to straighten out the lines of the building’s structure as much as possible without starting an outright distortion.
I would certain welcome any C&C you folk might offer. I think that C&C too could be part of these challenges, assuming the owner welcomes it. Getting back into photography, I certainly welcome your suggestions. It can only make me better at it.

One other potential for this image is to convert it into B+W - Lines and structures always work well in B+W IMO.

Hello Sara
all along the old docklands in London by the river Thames the beautiful new modern apartments and penthouses make such an interesting sight. not to everyones liking though. I know there were objections to some of the modern sights further along. I was standing on a moving boat which was not going too fast . it was a bitterly cold day and the sky was very over cast. got a right dose from not wearing the right clothes as I didn't expect the wind to be so cold, but I was glad to get a few catches of the wonderful buildings on that side of the river.

thanks
