Nice shot of cute child!
The background is close to black, especially in left upper corner. The rest of the background is deep shades of gray, some tinted in a direction that might look brown. There are some objects in the background which are faint and have obvious color. I don't think they are distracting - others might disagree.
The child's sweater has a bluish caste which can be easily removed if you know how to do color corrections.
Need details: what camera, what lighting (looks like a stage spotlight), what color space (sRGB?), what printer/paper, what editing and printing applications, etc.?

Ahh ... those are leaves in the background!!
I wouldn't worry about color correction at this point - it's pretty good as is.
If you're using Canon paper (Photo Paper Pro) and Canon inks, you should be getting good results. Black should print black! See this post for more help: http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29530

It's all going to depend on your printer and the paper and. I did a test of the Kodak and Sony self serve print kiosks. And I found that printing the same image on both yielded a lighter "exposure" on the print on the Sony. If your printer and paper print lighter it may reveal the leaves more. If you were to turn the brightness way up you'd probably see the background instead of black.
